Capsule Film Review: Circus (2000)

in #film7 years ago

Protagonists of 2000 British crime comedy Circus, played by John Hannah and Famke Janssen, are Leo and Gloria, a couple that earns living by various confidence schemes. They want to settle down and leave the life of crime behind, but Leo’s gambling addiction complicates matters, forcing them both of them to involved in various shady deals that include tax fraud and contract killing. Scriptwriter David Logan was advertised as "British Tarantino", but apart from some superficial similarities with Pulp Fiction this film doesn’t validate such claim. Characters, despite great effort to make them "cool" are mostly forgettable (with exception of loan shark played by Eddie Izzard) and rather diverse and talented cast is wasted. Despite attempt to splice up the film with few "shocking" twists, experienced viewer could easily guess what and how is going to happen for the most of the film.
