Bill Gates Foundation Uses Ripple To Build Open Source Interoperability Payment Software
Bill Gates has made more money than any person in current history, but I don't think he will be remembered for that. My guess is that he will be remembered for the foundation he and his wife, Melinda, created and currently run. That foundation did many spectacular things (I remember that once Bill Gates released some mosquitos from a jar at a conference in which he tried to make people aware about malaria and pretty much the entire audience got involved after that, or so I heard).
So, the latest big action of the foundation is the release of an open source payment software, called Mojaloop, which will enable unbanked people to have access to financial services, using Ripple's Interledger technology.
Here's a short excerpt from the press release:
Mojaloop (building off the Swahili word “moja,” which means “one”) was created in partnership with fintech developers Ripple, Dwolla, ModusBox, Crosslake Technologies and Software Group, using cutting-edge technology such as the Interledger Protocol, a solution for settling funds among multiple providers across their individual systems. It joins other promising digital financial software, but is the first model that can help extend interoperability from mobile money providers to any bank, merchant or government institution in a customer’s economy in a way that specifically meets the needs of the poor.
Sometimes, technology does work for the people.
