Titanfall 2 - Review
Titnafall 2
I have very mixed feelings about Titanfall although I put it on my list of top games of 2016, which I still think it is, there is a lot that is wrong with the game and it almost feels a little incomplete.
I think Titanfall as a whole is an amazing idea, its different than most shooters that are out at the moment. I am always a fan of new things and different ideas and Titanfall does bring a lot of new ideas, the game types aren't so much about capturing a point or hugely about objectives.
Titans
The main objective is either to get enough points to get your titan or to kill the enemy titans, and the titans are a lot of fun to play as and have quite a lot of customization so you can get into a fight with someone in the same titan and have no clue how it will end.
However I feel like the maps don't really work with the titans as well as you would like, they are purposely made so titans can get around the whole map but don't fit everywhere, the terrain of most maps is also very rugged.
I personal feel like as the game is so futuristic the maps should be the same way and rather than looking like a natural world they should look like a sort of metallic battle arena made for titan battling.
I really like that foot soldiers can actually take out titans if you out play them enough, this is to be fair helped by the fact that the maps do have buildings titans can't get into so you can cite them pretty well. Also you can jump on to a titans back and pull out one of the cores that will deal a big chunk of damage to them.
However when you battle against just titans it's not much different from a soldier fighting a soldier, you can kill each other pretty quick, so I think it would be cool if there was more titan VS titan counter play to make the battles slightly more interesting.
Soldiers
In Titanfall the basic soldiers don't have much health so you need to play carefully, however rather than creating campers it makes everyone run around the map using the parkour aspects to dodge and outplay each other.
There is also seven different types of foot soldier;
Grapple - The grapple has two charges before a short cooldown time, the grapple allows you to get to hard to reach places and you can almost slingshot yourself if you get the grapple at the right angle on a corner, the grapple is also used to jump onto a Titan and remove the core.
Pulse Blade - The pulse blade is a close range knife that also used like a sonar releasing the occasional pulse showing nearby enemies.
Holo Pilot - The holo pilot creates a hologram of your character for a short time that will copy your last movement.
Stim - The stim gives you a speed boost and a health regen boost for a small time.
Cloak - The cloak, cloaks you for a short time, other soldiers will be able to see a rough outline of you, however you won't appear to Titans.
Phase Shift - The phase shift teleports you to a different point for a short time.
A-Wall - The a-wall creates a particle wall in front of you that empowers bullets shot through it, the wall can only be destroyed by an enemy shooting the bottom panel.
I am a big fan of the variation of the soldiers as it just adds another level to the game, it also makes for a lot of interesting fights and scenarios you wouldn't find in any other game.
Weapons
There really isn't a huge amount to talk about when it comes to the weapons, not because there isn't many but because the balancing is done really well so there you won't find one weapon the stands out hugely. I think part of the reason the weapons feel so balanced is because soldiers have such little health that most weapons will kill within a similar amount if shots.
Snipers are one shot but you will have to be pretty good with them to do well as the game really isn't designed for snipers as it is so fast pace.
There is a secondary that is a sort of pulse cannon that has a short charge time that will one shot soldiers, however it is more practical to use it against enemy Titans as it will do a good chunk of damage per-shot.
I'm not going to go into the other weapons because there isn't any that hugely stand out in power or any that are simply too strong.
Thoughts
Overall I am a big fan of Titanfall however I think because of the the things that hinder the game there is only a certain amount you can play the game, not to say it will get boring really quickly. I see it as similar to the Star wars battlefront game although it is undoubtedly a good game there is something that's missing that just makes it boring after you have had it for a month or two.
I would definitely like to see a third installment to the Titanfall series to see what they decide to change and improve, as this game is a big improvement on the first so if they make an even better third game it could be outstanding.
