1. The Man Who Wasn’t There – 2001
NARRATED PIECE OF ART DIRECTED BY THE COEN BROTHERS
This one is as intriguing as it sounds. The fact that it is narrated by our protagonist’s deep, sexy, manly voice is what truly makes it shine.
Take a good look at this man’s face. What do you think he does for a living?
Is he a mobster? Nope.
He kills people, for a mobster.. Not quite.
Does he smoke a lot of cigars? Yes, but it’s not how he earns his living..
I know, he is a private detective! Close, but no cigar.
I give up, what does he do? He cuts.. wait for it.... people’s hair for a living.
Yes, it’s true, he is a simple barber. The fact that he is just a simple barber makes you wonder: ‘How is that intriguing at all?’. Go watch this movie right now, you will see what I’m talking about. It might be a bit of a slow burn, but it’s worth the ride.
2. The Talented Mr. Ripley – 1999
YOU WILL FALL IN LOVE WITH THEIR STORY BUT REMEMBER, LOVE HURTS.
Never judge a movie by it’s cover or by it’s title, yes it usually helps, but sometimes you can be fooled into thinking that some movies are as cool as they sound or even worse, thinking they are as bad as the name they bear, which is a bias anyway.
I told you all that because I always judged movies based on their names, if the name did not ring any bells then I would be reluctant to watch it.. I delayed watching this movie for so long.. something which I shouldn’t have done, because as it stands, it’s one my favorite movies.
Anyway, this movie follows the story of a man named Tom Ripley. A gentleman who is sent to Italy to retrieve a rich and spoiled millionaire playboy called Dickie Greenleaf.
True to it’s name, Mr. Ripley is actually very talented, proved by the fact it doesn’t take long to find and befriend our playboy and his beautiful gal, Marge Sherwood. It takes a degree of cunning to be able to do that.
But of course things do happen, it couldn’t have been that easy.. I’ll let you discover on your own.It’s going to be one emotional roller-coaster, so brace for it!
3. Enemy – 2013
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU FIND YOUR DOPPELGÄNGER ?
This film tells the story of a man who found his look-alike by watching a movie that was recommended to him by a co-worker. After the realizing there is a person in that movie that looks just like him, desperation hits him. Desperation to find out who that person is, what he does and the truth about their similarity.
But this desperation hurts the people around him, a fact he doesn’t realize..Pay close attention to this film! You might be left saying “What the F*CK?” at the end of the movie if you don’t.
This one is for all of you who hold high sentimental value for symbolism.
P.S: After watching it, make sure you understand it fully before even considering to hate it. This film does not make it easy it to be loved, because it first needs to be understood. Trust me, once you have an idea of what is truly going on, you will be recommending it to others.
4. Pieta - 2012
YOU MIGHT NOT LIKE KOREAN MOVIES, BUT YOU WILL LOVE ‘PIETA‘.
If there is one word to describe it would be: Brilliant.
It will be one of the best revenge movies you have seen and one of those that will absolutely shock you. However it does not rely on gore to achieve that effect.
You probably won’t understand what is happening until later in the movie, not to mention that in the beginning you’ll be a little confused as to who the main character is, what he does and what his motives are, but that is a trait almost all Korean movies share.
It follows the story of a violent loan shark, who also seems to be a little bit psycho (mommy issues?!). There is nothing that can stop him from doing his job as he sees fit, at least that is what we believe until he meets a mysterious woman that claims to know him.
We are strong believers that you should know as little as possible about a movie before seeing it. If you still want to know more, feel free to check it out on IMDb.
5. Timecrimes - 2007
‘LOS CRONOCRÍMENES‘ : SPANISH SCI-FI THRILLER
It might look like it’s just a shitty horror movie, however, it is not. A man accidentally finds something that starts a series of unforeseeable disasters, that is all you need to know.
I highly recommend you do not watch any trailer or read anything more than this, the less you know, the better.
For this one I will not post the IMDb link, you are free to look it up yourself , though I feel their review spoils the movie a bit.

Nice list! I've seen The Man Who Wasn't There, Enemy, and Timecrimes. I enjoyed all of them. I haven't seen the Coen Brothers one since it came out like 16 years ago, but I always have the fond memory of Billy Bob Thornton arriving in every scene lighting a cigarette. Loved Enemy. Such a creepy ending, and I believe I got most of the symbolism (I think). Timecrimes was a fun mindbender, which I agree about going in not knowing much. Sometimes I don't watch trailers because they give away too many plot points.
I've been meaning to see the other two. Just never got around to seeing The Talented Mr. Ripley. I've wanted to see Pieta because I really like Time and Address Unknown, while 3-Iron was beautiful. I love a bunch of Korean and Japanese films. Some of them have a dark edge that you don't see very often in the US. Others play with your mind and senses.
