Is it Good To Be Bilingual?
What Is your opinion about Bilingual?
I feel that bilingual education is an approach in which a person can speak two languages at the same time. But in my case, I am not sure what category I fall in as I can speak five languages fluently and a few others that I can manage to express myself in.
The funniest part of my speaking multiple languages is that I am no good at either my mother tongue or what you would call my paternal language. The reason is that my forefathers left the area where they spoke the Punjabi language well before my father was even born, so he was brought up speaking a different language, Hindi.
My father was married to a lady whose forefathers spoke Konkani, but they came and settled in Rajasthan State and later migrated to a different state in north India. So, my knowledge of Konkani is almost nil, but I can speak Punjabi because I tried to learn it during my several visits to Punjab during my working period but I can't read or write it.
In India, we speak thousands of languages and dialects, and we have 22 officially recognized languages. The English language is one of the most common mediums of education integrated into instruction so that all groups of students can learn together in a common language at a higher level.
Now, I can say that I am a Hindi speaker, but I’m pretty fluent in English. I agree my accent in India is a bit different from what I speak when I am abroad, but I rarely find any problem while speaking with Americans or British, talking to Australians is different because they use too many slang words and they talk pretty fast.
If you're a parent would you like your kids to learn more than a language, and if you're a kid would you like to learn another language apart from your mother tongue?
Since speaking English is an essential skill, especially for us Indians, as it’s a requirement for a job, my child learned the language fluently and effortlessly right from the beginning.
In my country, most people start studying English from around 1st grade, and it's taught at school up until high school as a subject, although I would say the average educated Indian knows to speak English to an acceptable level.
I believe my level of fluency is higher than the average Indian because I was in a marketing job where a lot of traveling was involved. Therefore, I came across people who spoke different languages, but English was the medium of our conversation.
I am sure you will agree with me that bilingual efficiency provides an opportunity to listen, speak, read, and write in different languages. In India, people with multilinguistic skills have the opportunity to earn better placement in different fields. I knew that my child would eventually get an opportunity for a better job so she learned two languages from the beginning but now she also knows more than two like I do but her languages are different than mine. She calls the computer languages.
Which other language(s) will you like to learn?
There is a long list of languages I want to speak, but Spanish is one of the most commonly used languages here in Steemit, and I am not surprised that Spanish is at the top of the list of languages, even leaving English behind.
I have been trying to learn it ever since I joined this site, and I am pleased to announce that I can read and understand at least 25% of its words, as some of them are similar to English words with a little difference in spelling.
What are the advantages of speaking more than one language?
There are many benefits to speaking a language other than your mother tongue. I believe people who can speak more than one language demonstrate better expression, and development, have finer memory and enhanced concentration, and are better at solving problems. Practical benefits for people with bilingual capacity include better career opportunities in an ever-increasing global market.
It's good to know that you're a multilingual, The benefits of being multilingual are large scale, you never know, either for vacation purpose or career purposes, just a lot of advantages. You might need to travel to another country, and good enough you know their language, It will allows you to connect with more people, being able to speak someone’s native language impresses the indigenes a lot. Success!
That's right. My own country is so large and diversified with different cultures, languages, and regions that if one knows how to speak different languages he can find things easier to deal with. Thank you!
It is happy to hear that you can speak more than five languages. I am aware that several languages are used in India, and the Indian constitution recognizes 22 languages. However, in my country, there are only three main languages: Sinhala, Tamil, and English. I can only speak two languages: Sinhala, my mother tongue, and English, our second language. Your article is very well written.
Thank you so much, actually, I wanted to boast about my knowledge of languages so I took this chance 😁
