Daily Psalms and Proverbs - Sat. July 8th

in #christianity7 years ago

A good day to all reading this! Today's reading is Psalm 8:3-9 and Proverbs 4:1-4

Psalm 8:3-9

When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;

What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?

For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.

Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet:

All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field;

The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas.

O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!

In this psalm, David is considering the glory of God that is evident all around us in nature.

He sees the wondrous heavens, and marvels that their Creator would also give some glory and honor to man. It makes sense for God to have glory and honor, but it doesn't seem to make sense for man to.

While the KJV translation says God has made man "a little lower than the angels," the original Hebrew says God made man a little lower than Himself.

David recognizes that God has given man the most exalted position in His Creation, and that we have dominion over the whole earth. He praises God for His love and mercy towards us, that we've been given this high position not on our own merit, but by God's grace. He has shared a little bit of His glory with us.

This grace, that we've been made in God's image and placed over nature, a little lower than God Himself, reflects the grace we receive through God giving His Son for us.

Proverbs 4:1-4

Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding.

For I give you good doctrine, forsake ye not my law.

For I was my father's son, tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother.

He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live.

In these verses, Solomon instructs children to listen to him as an elder with wisdom to pass on to them, just as his father David taught him. His first instruction to the young is to listen closely. He promises that what he has to teach will be good for them, and they should store this knowledge in their hearts. One can know something intellectually, but to take it to heart means one has come to believe it and put it into practice. Solomon promises that obeying the wisdom he has to pass on to them brings life.
