What do you understand to be freedom as a parents or kid?
I'm not yet married so i do not yet have kids of my own so I would answer this from a kid's perspective. I mean, i once was s kid yeah? and no matter my age I would always be a kid to my parents.
Freedom is a concept that must be existent in a parent-child relationship. We must learn to set and obey certain boundaries in our relationships. Freedom is thus that opportunity given to a child to explore certain aspects of their life independently, make their own decisions and learn from their own successes and failures without being spoonfed. The opportunity for them to grow and have their own identity.
What can make you to grant more freedom to your kids or what can you do to earn more freedom?
Ultimately, it all boils down to a two-way effect.
Freedom is given with age and time factors. In a normal sense, the older a child gets, the more freedom they should get to have. Another way in which freedom can actually earn with little relativity to age is by being responsible.
We may find that some little children are actually given more freedom than they normally should and this is because they have proven that they are able to manage this privilege responsibly. This is a case of earned freedom and ultimately I would say age is just a necessary but not a sufficient factor in how much freedom should be granted to kids. It all boils down to how much responsible they can be with such privilege.
Advantages and disadvantages of freedom both to parents and kids
Advantages
Granting freedom to children helps to foster their feeling of independence. It opens them up to the world and prepares them for what comes next. The fact remains, as much as we want to protect our kids and shield them from the harsh realities of the outside world. The best way to actually get them prepared is to let them get first-hand experience and to survive in this, they need to be able to demonstrate some form of independence.
Freedom also helps to sharpen decision-making skills which eventually helps to significantly impact one's personal growth positively. It plays a big role in embracing individuality.
Disadvantages
On the flip side, freedom, if allowed in an excessive manner can lead to making unwise choices on the part of the kids. It can lead to them growing faster than they actually should.
Believing that they are able to decide on their own when in reality they are unable to face the responsibilities and consequences of their own actions and decisions. It can also expose them to potential dangers they may be unprepared for.
What can cause one to lose the freedom he or she has?
I must say, a number of factors come to play in this particular question but some of the prominent ones include lack of responsibility. If you are granted certain freedom as a kid and eventually show that you do not have what it takes to manage such opportunity well, then you have essentially demonstrated that you are not ready to be put in that position of freedom.
Also, disobedience. I feel this is the biggest factor in this current world. Parents often try to get back at their children for being disobedient by taking away their freedom. We all know that short sentence which always delivers shocks to our spines "You're grounded"!
Why is freedom necessary?
Freedom is necessary in order to effectively shape your kids future for the better. Guaranteeing them some form of freedom either as they grow up or as they earn the right to by being responsible helps to nurture them positively, improve their critical thinking and give them the opportunity to take active part in decisions directly impacting their future.
It also helps them to embrace their individuality and hone in on their personal attributes. The granting and removal of freedom could also serve as an effective way for parents to give direction to their children and regulate their behaviour.
