Trichocereus

in #trichocereus6 years ago (edited)

I first got into growing trichocereus cactus only about a year ago - I had a less than exciting time with some that I bought off ebay and wanted to grow my own. I thought I would share my experiences of learning and screwing up growing them in hopes that others will learn as well. Originally I got into growing these thinking they were all "San Pedro" which isn't the case at all. That only really refers to a specific type of trichocereus (the scientific name). Honestly there are other websites out there with a lot more information on the scientific side of this. My goal is to give people a little insight into my process of growing them. You can learn from my screw ups along the way(which, not being an expert, there certainly will be screw ups).

Here are some of my larger cuts that have finally started to root. They are clones of other peoples larger cacti. Theres a thriving community of people that trade and sell cactus out there. The exciting thing about getting a clone is that it's genetically the same as the plant it came from. So if there were a sought after trait you wanted to maintain, getting a clone of a larger stand of cactus is a pretty preferable way to do that. For the soil in these I use a mixture of fox farms soil and pumice. I heard that pumice on top can get pretty hot in the sun and burn cactus so I added a layer of perlite to stop that.

Trichocereus macrogonus (a species of trichocereus, I dont know anything in particular about the particular plant this came from)

This picture has two in it. The one in the back suffered a bit of trauma after being knocked over (and most of the roots getting ripped off, by my dog, and then getting dropped on the top when I tried to catch it, it's referred to as a sausage because when it grows it tends to form link like shapes apparently. The one in front was sold to me as 350s 01x02

Ill follow up later with seedlings, smaller seed grown cactus, and some of the pitfalls Ive run into along the way.
