Most Difficult Conversation I've Ever Had

This is the conversation I had with a friend who had just broken up with another friend. These two were my friends in the university. Things didn't work out between the two and they had to break up. Sometimes after the breakup, I got a call from the guy to help pick up some of his stuff which was still with her. Since I was the mutual friend. So I gave her a call and then went to her place in the evening. She was sitting alone in the room, with the guy's stuff kept in a bag on the bed. Her eyes puffed up. I didn't know how to respond. What followed was the most awkward and yet emotionally difficult conversation I have ever had.
We talked about school and the classes she had the next day. What she was planning to make for breakfast. What new music album I was listening to. Random stuff until I picked up what I had come to pick up, and was about to leave. Right then, she hugged me and cried like a little girl whose heart had been shattered.
I just stood there not knowing know how to respond. Hugged her back. Told her things would turn out okay.
