ColorChallenge - MondayRed - Red Maple (Acer rubrum)

Samaras (flattened winged fruits) of the red maple.

Famous for their beautiful fall foliage, Red Maples (Acer rubrum) are sometimes overlooked in the spring in the profusion of spring-flowering trees. But they add a magnificent red haze to the distant forest landscapes as they bloom and fruit, and, up-close, the abundant red flowers, flower stems, and young fruits - which emerge before the leaves - are bright and interesting. Given a breeze, the samaras flutter and twist, adding motion to the overall cheery effect.

Red maples are deciduous shade trees, growing 40 to 70 feet tall, native to eastern and central North America, and are one of the most widely-planted shade trees across the continent.
