What is Reality?

in #philosophy8 years ago (edited)

What is reality? What does it mean for something to be real? Is it simply what we perceive to be solid matter/existing? Because most of what we perceive to be real is just empty space. So what does it mean to be 'real'? Does it mean if we can touch and see or hear it then it is real?

So, if the tree falls in the woods and nobody is around does it make a sound? Or once everyone leaves the classroom, are the chairs and tables still inside even though no one is perceiving them? If vision is the only validation that we have to tell us that something is real then we can assert that most things aren't real.

It can get kind of tricky trying to convince someone of what reality is, of what is truly existing, when you can no longer use “because I can see, feel, hear, smell or taste it” as evidence to support your claim.

So what is reality? How would you describe it yourself? How can we determine what is real and what isn't?

Does the fact that we doubt serve as the very proof that we are in fact existing?

We ALL live in our heads. Consciousness is an emergent network of the wiring of the brain. We get sensory input, among which are sight, sound, smell and kinesthetics. Some of us (Hellen Keller for example) are dealt the short straw.

The potential for cybernetic enhancement is real. IF the inputs were to be borked..would we ever know?
