RIDESTORY- North Rim of the Grand Canyon

in #cycling7 years ago (edited)

So this ride story Takes place around 1992. I was with a group of cyclist doing a national parks tour that started in Arizona and ended in Montana. The total trip was almost 2000 miles due to the route we took. However on this day near the North rim of the Grand Canyon, Myself and two others were lucky to escape with our lives.

It was mid day and our cycling group of 40 people would usually get fairly spaced out. I was riding with two other guys and we were riding 3 abreast in the road. We would scoot over for cars and such and were not hogging the road or anything like that.

After climbing a fairly big mountain, It was now time for the fun part...the downhill side. Weee. As we start descending and picking up speed, a small car towing a small U-haul trailer passed us.

The Trailer they were towing was smaller than the one above and older. They were about 30 feet in front of us and after they passed us we had gone back to riding 3 abreast in the road. We were flying down this hill when all of a sudden... Clang cla clangitty clag clang clang. The back bumper of this trailer falls off and is coming straight for us. I was on the left so I veer left just in time. The guy on the right veers right. and the dude in the middle, miraculously bunny hops over the bumper!

It was such a close call that the bumper had sliced through the leather strap of my toe clip.

Things could have ended so much worse. Luckily we rode away unscathed and with a crazy story to tell twenty five years later.

Whew!

Thanks for reading.
The pics above are not my own.
The grand canyon pic is from pixabay.com
and the other 2 are just random google searches. I hope that's not too plagerizy.

Wow such a lucky escape! I guess you just can't see things like this coming

Never been to the Grand Canyon. Thanks for posting. I have seen nany pictures. It always looks so beautiful.

It is scary how things can sometimes happen so fast ! Lucky everything ended okay!

Yea. later on that same trip in northern Utah a bull jumped a fence and started chasing us down the road. Ya never know whats going to happen!

Hahah well that sounds even more scary, sounds like bicycling is a much more dangerous sport than I could have anticipated:)

You guys were very lucky, especially the dude in the middle. Bet he was relieved once he realised that he had managed to clear the bumper.

Yes indeed... That bumper could have easily taken all three of us out.
