DTube Doesn't Have a Written Curation Policy?! Hot Topic, Comin' Through - Video Request by @ghulammujtaba

in #news7 years ago (edited)

So we got into a pretty hot topic in our DTube discord and @ghulammujtaba (check out his videos and give him a follow!) requested me to do a video. Before I did the video, I thought about it long and hard and am being 100% transparent by just copying and pasting my notes right on here. One thing I did fail to mention was his reference to @dtube upvoting copyright content - my answer to that is simple. There are A LOT of videos being uploaded. As we speak, I'm in queue #5 - there are a lot of videos to go through. The video that you mentioned happened 2 months ago. I'm sure they learned from their mistake and are doing their best to make sure it doesn't happen again. We do have human beings behind this and nobody is perfect, but they are doing their very best and we have some solid people with integrity behind the scene so personally I'll give them credit and I think it's well deserved. Are they perfect? No. Am I? No. Are you? No. Is anyone? No. But we live and we learn and we do our very best. With that said. Here are my notes 100% transparent.

Other DTubers/Steemians that I mention in this are @bethwheatcraft and @valorforfreedom - make sure to check out there pages and give them a follow --

Here's my full transcript

“DTube doesn’t have any curation policy! Hot Topic, Comin’ Through!” - Video Request by @ghulammujtaba
This a video request by @ghulammujtaba
Dtube doesn’t have any curation policy ike other steem based applications have.
utopian-io is an example
Utopian has some guidelines such as - how much is invested, amount of sponsors, level of satisfaction, value, difficulty of work, etc
Utopian up votes are by a bot - so they obviously have some fixed set of curation guidelines
Here’s why I believe there are no clear-cut curation policies for videos
Going off what we’ve learned in public video sharing from various platforms such as Facebook, youtube, twitter, vimeo and the likes, it’s actually really difficult to determine a “good video.”
In the past 10 years, so many different types of videos have had a viral effect.
From public fights to pranks to make-up videos to photography videos to wedding videos to music videos to justin brieber singing on his webcam, to iPhones being smashed, to tesla’s racing with ferrari’s to people twerking to late night shows…i could go on…video and art in general is very subjective so they’re following a set of standards and doing their best to diversify the content so that the viewers and new people coming in get a balanced viewing experience. Will there be one in the future? I don’t know. But right now there isn’t, and I personally don’t think there should be a written one. Otherwise people will go generic and try to hit it every single time. People would try to game the up vote system and content would just be shoehorned into that one category. DTube would lose it’s diversity and potential for mass appeal. Bethwheatcraft also mentioned how it’s subjective and hard to curate. At this point - I believe DTube is doing their very best and I think they’re doing a good job because you can see the diversity in it. If they weren’t - our hot and trending video would look like this - Haejin Technical Analysis, Gaming Video, Recording Screenshot, Music Video with a picture, copyright, plagiarized stuff, more plagiarized stuff, original content, adamkokesh, haejin in the next 10 videos, more gaming videos, minecraft, low-quality crap upvoted by bots, more low-quality crap upvoted by bots, more of Haejin technical analysis. So it was actually brilliant of Ned to trust DTube with the delegation and in my opinion, they’re doing an amazing job. Am I bias? Yes. We all are. This is my personal opinion and anybody here is free to disagree with me.
Regarding your videos not getting upvoted - I have no control over that. And valorforfreedom kinda called you out on joining DTube for the up votes. Which you know, he’s just being him and after one encounter with ValorForFreedom, I was like “love him or hate him” he’s here for a purpose and I think his presence is necessary for us to sometimes see another perspective. And although we got off on the wrong foot, I’ve actually grown to respect him despite any differences we may have.
Let me share this story - I’m a basketball fan. My team is Toronto Raptors. There’s this player named Norman Powell. He was suppose to be a main player - a starter as you call them. For a long time he wasn’t. And obviously him being taken out of the rotation wasn’t fun for him. He was disappointed. He didn’t like the coaches call. But what the coach was doing was working. It’s not about the individual, it’s about the growth of the platform. It’s not about you. It’s not about whether you get up votes or not. It’s about the team. It’s about DTube and the growth of DTube. What the Coach was doing for the Toronto Raptors was working - in fact, they’re first place right now. Whether Norman Powell liked it or not - he didn’t get to play. All he could do was work on himself. And when the Coach felt like he was ready, he would put him in to play. Finally the opportunity came and Norman Powell got better. He started hitting his shots and the coach made him a starter again.
What’s the moral of the story? The coach didn’t put him in because he was upset about not playing. The coach had a system and the system was working. It got them to first place. Norman only got to start and play again when he worked on his own game and improved his shots.
Some of you may watch this and say “Oh Dnews…you get upvoted all the time. You don’t know how we feel.”
You can check my history - there was point when I uploaded 7-8 videos straight and didn’t get a vote. Did I complain? No. Did I call DTube out and get angry at them? No. Did I get sad? Yeah. Did it hurt? I little. I spent probably over 20 hours of work putting those videos together. But I focused on myself. I improved my shot. I thought “How can I improve my videos? how can I improve my presentation? How can I get creative? How can I make things more attractive?” and I evolved as a creator. You can watch my first videos on a webcam and see.
So I do know how it feels. My encouragement to you is - just keep at it. Keep on truckin’
Because the prize doesn’t go to the one that never fails. It goes to the one that never quits.
I will end with this.
Don’t take DTube for granted. Appreciate what they have given us. Stop complaining. Start acting.
The world doesn’t reward the problem seekers. It rewards the solution getters.
Be positive. Stay positive.

I'm 50/50 on this because it depends on what type of work you do. As a documentary video maker there is nothing you can improve; you get what you get and you only get 1 shot at it. In this video you effectively demonstrated this by adjusting your light; me, I get rained on, bumped into, have to work with available light, crawl through the mud, climb on things, have to pay to get in, compete for location, and have to travel to find something to shoot. I'm not ungrateful for DTube's support for folks like yourself, @bethwheatcraft and @valorforfreedom, but when something like a sped up video of someone trying on half their wardrobe with no intro, no outro and who didn't even bother adding copyright free music, gets a $210 up vote, ..I'm a little irritated.

It sends a clear message. To me it looks like DTube shows a preference for talking Heads, and for a platform that wants diversity, a broader spectrum is needed even if I agree that we don't need more TA videos from (@)youknowwhojin. How about a $200 up vote for some person documenting the build up of a new Computer? Car repair? How about a DTube related subject: Setting up a Linux based video editing workstation for more affordable quality video creation? That kind of stuff is hard to find here because it's not encouraged and the folks who try it and get zip, won't do that again.

I do understand that it's a tough job to manually select material to up vote, but I also feel constructive criticism is warranted if people are expected to put in effort, time and money to create better and more diverse content rather than turning the Camera on themselves. Keep in mind that if the criticism doesn't come, people don't actually care and this is not what we want, or is it? I'm not only a creator, I'm also a consumer and I want decent stuff to watch. I actually care and hope DTube grows into a rock solid platform. Greetings!

You know what's funny? I was actually thinking "oh I forgot to mention that one video I saw of a 2x speed of someone changing clothes and how it got upvoted like crazy"

Thanks for this comment. Makes a lot of sense. I'm about to do a follow-up video because there has been more talk on it.

Look forward to seeing it!

I love the energy that your perspective comes from brother :)
and as far as you getting so many @dtube upvotes goes, well, that just tells me that the current system is working. You do an amazing job.
Peace.

You're getting 4 votes for this comment @bobaphet! You know how to make a man feel good inside! LOL

Seriously, thanks for the kind words. I appreciate that very much :) that's why we love ya, man. And why DTube loves ya. You got a good heart, my friend. A good heart.

PEACE OUT MY STEEMIES :D

Your totally right about it being a smart move on dtube's part...Dtube would be full of just some low quality content, and stuff upvoted by bots all day long...and the diversification of the votes deserves much respect...practically any category/interest you have as a creator has an equal chance of being upvoted!

And you have evolved greatly in a short period of time as a creator...and you keep coming out with killer content. Awesome job. I'm working on it too!
#onelovedtube

Thanks so much @alphasteem! Yeah. It's just a necessary part of the process right now. Even looking at the hotlist right now, there's introductions, one gaming (vote bot up), crypto, life lessons (You. Lol), fitness, procrastination, gaming (vote bot), news, comedy, vlog personal, news, music, live performance, food

DTube is keeping it diversified. We can't take all the hard work for granted.

Takes one to know one :) your video coming up next! Thank you thank you thank you :D

#onelovedtube

i'm sure it'll keep getting better as time progresses.
i can't even imagine what other aspects of dtube are a top priority for them behind the scenes. #onelovedtube

Yeah you will bro. 100%

I really enjoyed your bit :)

#oneloveonelove

I agree with the video.
I also think that new creaters have themselfe the responsibility 2 get seen, like on other plattformes. (funny, interesting, good comments)
Most people arnt on purpose searching for new Videos its up to the content creator to to get them on their channel.

Just my opinion.

Good thoughts. Solid. Solid. Thanks for sharing and thanks for agreeing! :)

#onelovedtube

You're doing a good job. Your shades are sexy, can I haver them?

Good point with dtube upvoting and diversifying the front page.

No.

Face to face first.

Thank You for talking about this and reaching more People. Because People need to hear more about this. And focus on building a following and a group of fans that really love their work...

Yes all the Dtube upvotes are very welcome... but no one can take them as a taken...

Awesome words to end up the video :D Thank You for that.

Awww @sergiomendes! Thanks so much for the love <3 yeah people do need to hear about it and talk about it. It's a long-term planning we need to think about. And you're 100% right, they are welcome but we cannot take them as a given or for granted.

Thanks for watching it all the way to the end!!! :) super appreciate!!

Yeah I always watch the videos till the end... thats why it is 2.30 am and I am still here LOLOL

LOLOL! You're crazy! Go get some sleep! You're gonna be a zombie at work! :D

I am the majority of time ehehe

Hi @dnews that was a really impassioned explanation of what Dtube is all about - It's about content - "interesting" and "unique" content and otherwise. NOT simply about upvotes.
And its so true what you say about not releasing a "written" curation policy, because once they do that (some) people will just start "gaming the system" and making "cookie-cutter" content that ticks all the curation boxes just to rate higher, much like it is in Google land where people are employed full time by companies bust to outwit the bots and improve SEO rankings.

Keep fighting the good fight to keep DTube "unique" !

It seems they upvote what will make money like everyone else, unfortunately for minnows. That's why I always see the same channels in the hot and trending.

I pay attention to the hot list probably more than anybody and I see a lot of variety. That's my personal opinion. If I can back it up with data I would. Solid diversification across the board. There are definitely some regulars, but none that wouldn't qualify as good content or useful information. And it's early on in the platform still.

Congratulations @dnews, this post is the second most rewarded post (based on pending payouts) in the last 12 hours written by a User account holder (accounts that hold between 0.1 and 1.0 Mega Vests). The total number of posts by User account holders during this period was 2316 and the total pending payments to posts in this category was $5598.10. Balance in the ecosystem

That is some DTube Jedi stuff right there! Yes I agree completely and people need to learn that this entitlement mindset is the wrong way to go. Any DTube upvotes are such a boost when they do happen but they are not the point. If the only reason someone makes a video is to get a DTube vote then they need to flip their thinking upside down, Like you say self improvement and doing your own thing is where it is at. Looking slick bro.

If the only reason someone makes a video is to get a DTube vote then they need to flip their thinking upside down

It's not the only reason but yes, it's one of the reasons! How many people would be uploading videos on other platforms(DTube competitors let's suppose) that don't have some great SP and they don't upvote posts as well?
Again, my point was not to ask @dtube to upvote every post but to have some documentation placed for creators to know that they won't be getting any upvote on a plagiarized content (I have one example of this where DTube upvoted a video that was downloaded from Youtube) and to lay down some rules and regulations which I think is possible.

The point I was making was that if someone approaches this from the perspective of doing what they want to do,being themselves and constantly trying to improve , then in my opinion, that is a better approach. It was not aimed at any one specifically and I think your idea is a good one. I know how hard it is manually curating because I do it myself for the woodworking community, but i also think it is better than a bot. There are new things happening with DTube all the time and the more info for new users the better. Thanks
