How Steemit gave my mom a second chance in life

in #story8 years ago (edited)

My mom is the closest and the most amazing person on Earth. I can share everything with her because of the level of trust that we have with each other. This is powerful and I believe it has to be among all of the family members.

Evidently that’s not always the case, and you know it. The very least we can do is to treat our moms like a gift and a blessing because they deserve it.

I don’t want to write the whole introduction post of my mom here but I do want to share one story that can inspire you to help and encourage your own parent/parents to do something completely new and different.

Story

My mom has been working as a chief accountant for more than 20 years. She loved it but working in Ukraine on such position is a complete mess. Everything is keep changing and not regulated so the last several years were really hard for my mom emotionally. I’m proud of her persistence and perseverance, she overcame lots of obstacles along the way.

Long story short, 2 months ago she quit her job because it was too much for her. Having a very creative personality, she always loved to draw pictures, make some unique hand-made types of things and so on.

It was her passion and dream to draw, it was her mission in life to express and share creativity. But because of the way our society thinks, she decided to choose safety and stability over pursuing her dream. It is hard for me to comprehend but it happened, and nothing can be done about our past.

On the other side, we can always make a change here and now in order to provide something better for those that we care about in the future. We don’t have to change people but we can show them another way.

That was exactly what I did.

Almost 3 months ago when I joined Steemit I was really excited, especially when I received my first money. I was showing my mom and my stepdad the results and they were kind of surprised.

Obviously I was really curious about the potential of the platform and which categories will be interesting for people to read. And then I decided to give it a try and test my mom’s art work.

So I grabbed her album, took a picture and made some description. I created a separate Steemit account for my mom (@tanyabtc) because I thought if it’s about to succeed, it’s better to have an art-oriented content on another blog.

I didn’t anticipated to earn ever a dollar but it turned out $81 which was amazing. I took another picture from the album and posted it on the other day, and it made additional $91.

For those, who earn thousands of dollars on Steemit or even outside the platform, may not understand why I was so happy about. You know, my family lives in Ukraine where the average salary is about $200-$300/month. To make $81 for one drawing is like something unreal.

When I showed my mom the amount of money was made, she was astounded. After a while she decided to take it seriously, which was exactly what she did.

I am still observing how contented she really is, and keep thinking “What if I didn’t post that first picture? What might happen then?” I just tried to help, and it worked out positively. In any case, I had nothing to lose and everything to gain.

I hope Steemit is going to prosper and develop like crazy, despite of the low price of the actual cryptocurrency token. I believe in idea, I believe in @dan and @ned and in all of the developers that are working to improve the platform.

I just cannot describe what do I feel when I realize that my mom’s dream became a reality.

She is doing what she loves the most, she is positive, energized and excited about her contribution to the platform. I believe Steemit gave to her a second chance to life.

That’s why I have an enormous respect to the people who make other’s people dream come true. Thanks to the founders, community supporters and everybody who helped to grow this project to the size it stays right now. You have no idea how better the world can become.

Besides, here's me and my mom during rafting :)

Thank you for this. At a time when the price of steem is going down, this story should make it clear that besides just earnings, steemit can also be seen as a new way of doing things in freedom. I am sure a lot will find this post inspiring and give a glimpse of how steemit can help by showing a new path to people who are seeking an alternative.

And yes, thanks to the developers, who thought of this and actually coded it to give us steemit.

You're absolutely right. Steemit has to be a place where most of the good stories are shared, people just don't have to be shy doing that.
