Scientists are quite demanding about time. At the end of 2016, the people of the Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, United States, added one second per year. If you thought the year lasted a little longer than normal, you were right.

Why do they do it? As the rotation of the Earth is delayed with the passage of time, the years lengthen a little bit. When scientists track objects that are thrown into space, they must maintain precision to the millisecond. According to one of them, this is done "to ensure the accuracy of our programs to avoid collisions".

For most of us, winning or losing a second does not make much difference. However, according to Scripture, our time and the way we use it is important. For example, in 1 Corinthians 7:29, Paul reminds us that "time is short." The time we have to do God's work is limited, so we must use it wisely. The apostle urged us to "make good use of time, because the days are evil" (Ephesians 5:16).

This does not mean that we must count every second, as scientists do; But, considering the ephemeral nature of life (Psalm 39: 4), we can reflect on the importance of using time wisely.

Los científicos son bastante exigentes respecto al tiempo. A finales de 2016, la gente del Centro de Vuelos Espaciales Goddard, en Maryland, Estados Unidos, agregó un segundo al año. Si te pareció que el año duró un poquito más de lo normal, tenías razón.

¿Por qué lo hacen? Como la rotación de la Tierra se retrasa con el paso del tiempo, los años se alargan un poquitito. Cuando los científicos rastrean los objetos que se lanzan al espacio, deben mantener la precisión al milisegundo. Según uno de ellos, esto se hace «para asegurar la exactitud de nuestros programas para evitar colisiones».

Para la mayoría de nosotros, ganar o perder un segundo no marca mucha diferencia. Sin embargo, según la Escritura, nuestro tiempo y la manera en que lo usamos sí es importante. Por ejemplo, en 1 Corintios 7:29, Pablo nos recuerda que «el tiempo es corto». El tiempo que tenemos para hacer la obra de Dios es limitado, por eso debemos usarlo sabiamente. El apóstol nos instó a «[aprovechar] bien el tiempo, porque los días son malos» (Efesios 5:16).

Esto no significa que debemos contar cada segundo, como lo hacen los científicos; pero, al considerar la naturaleza efímera de la vida (Salmo 39:4), podemos reflexionar en la importancia de usar el tiempo con sabiduría.
