Watching me watching you.

There's a saying in Yorkshire (GB): "There's nowt so fickle as folk."

Back in 2010 Microsoft released Xbox One Kinect. At first, everyone was all excited about the new ability to see and be seen by what effectively was a webcam hooked up to your entertainment system but then people began to get concerned about the privacy of the device in that it could potentially monitor your mood, heart-rate and eye movements. It was also discovered that the device was actually monitoring you when you thought it was off!

Fast forward just under ten years and Facebook has announced the release of its Portal device and service. Using Facebooks own Messenger or WhatsApp and incorporating integration with Amazons Alexa. While Microsofts Kinect was supposedly designed initially for gameplay, both systems offered pretty much the same capability in that you could communicate with friends and family via a video call.

So what we have here is a technology that was frowned upon possibly because it was Microsoft promoting it to a system that Joe Public looks willing to accept because it's Facebook probably one of the least trustworthy company's out there when it comes to privacy and protecting your data! Having said that, maybe I'm being a little unfair? During those ten years, all sorts of monitoring devices have come on the market that we all use pretty much every day everything from Facial Recognition to access your phone or tablet, to devices which measure your daily activity. Never mind worrying about carrying an identity card, you gave up your privacy ages ago.
