Dumbo [EN-IT]
In 1941 "Dumbo" cartoon was previewed in a movie theater in New York, after 78 years the same Disney decides to return to the office with what is considered the fourth classic of the American historical society, directed by Tim Burton.
This time it is not a cartoon, but a movie with real actors, even if with a clear prevalence of digital, especially in settings. I hadn't heard of this name for so many years, I was still a child when I watched the cartoon that told the story of a little flying elephant.
I want to warn you that from now on you may run into some spoilers.
Set after the end of World War I, the beginning sees the Medici circus company as its protagonist, who travels by train to various locations in the United States of America, where Max Medici (Danny De Vito) is the boss, Milly and Joe, two children belonging to the same circus and mother's orphans, await the return of their father, Holt Farrier (Colin Farrell), from the war and go to the train station to wait him, their loved dad with their great surprise is without an arm and they are shocked.
Before leaving for war, the father was also part of the circus, of which he was a skilled acrobatic horse rider, but on his return his job will have to change, he will be commissioned by Max to take care of an Indian elephant, who really soon it will give life to a puppy with enormous ears that is immediately categorized as a freak from the big part of the circus group and above all by Max Medici. To hide the physical defect and present him to public, his ears are covered at his first show, but when the child tries to take a feather the cover that wrapped his head go away and the public mock him and immediately call him Dumbo, because of an unfortunate fall of the letter D instead of the J on a billboard, the mother, to protect him, intervenes and becomes frightened, accidentally breaks the supporting column of the tent and risks hurting the people, for this she will be removed forever from the circus.
Milly and Joe love the puppy, and playing with him, they discover that he loves chasing feathers, which, if they enter in his proboscis, can literally make him fly. From here the escalation of the puppy to fame, it will become so famous that the owner of Dreamland, very prestigious amusement park, V.A. Vandevere (Michael Keaton) will be able to convince Max to become his partner and bring the elephant in his park as a main attraction, the puppy is convinced to accept the transfer with the promise of being able to see his mother again in the future.
Vandevere turns out to be a man without scruples, which only interests his own image and profits, in public he is always together with Colette Marchant (Eva Green), known French trapeze artist who will have to ride Dumbo during the flying show, which he will fall in love with Holt and his sons.
The end of the movie will bring to light the sad discovery, the mother of the puppy was in the monsters section of Dreamland with wild beasts, the whole circus group will rebel against Vandevere helping Dumbo and the mother to escape to return in their natural habitat.
Pleasant film, it runs fast and does not require too much effort, even if it deals with heavy issues, such as loneliness, greed, grandeur mania, animal abuse, corruption world's work injustices and atrocities of war, still current themes treated with relative superficiality but that being addressed to a wide public, of almost all ages, could have some constructive effects.

Nel 1941 veniva proiettato in anteprima in una sala cinematografica a New York il cartone animato Dumbo, dopo 78 anni la stessa Disney decide di tornare alla carica con quello che è considerato il quarto classico della società storica americana, affidandone la regia a Tim Burton.
Questa volta non si tratta di un cartone animato, ma di un film con attori in carne ed ossa, anche se con un netta prevalenza dell'uso del digitale, soprattutto nelle ambientazioni. Erano tanti anni che non sentivo nominare questo nome, era ancora bambino quando guardai il cartone che narrava le vicende del piccolo elefantino volante.
Ambientato dopo la fine della prima guerra mondiale, l'inizio del film vede come protagonista la compagnia circense dei Medici, la quale viaggia in treno in diverse località degli Stati Uniti d'America, a capo di essa vi si trova Max Medici (Danny De Vito), Milly e Joe, due bambini facenti parte dello stesso circo ed orfani della madre, attendono il ritorno del padre, Holt Farrier (Colin Farrell), dalla guerra e si recano alla stazione del treno per attenderlo, avvolto nella nebbia appare il loro amato papà, con loro grande sorpresa lo vedono senza un braccio e ne rimangono sconvolti.
Prima di partire in guerra anche il padre faceva anch'esso parte del circo, del quale era un abile fantino acrobatico, ma al suo ritorno la sua mansione dovrà subire un cambiamento, verrà incaricato da Max di occuparsi di un elefante indiano, il quale ben presto darà vita ad un cucciolo dalle orecchie enormi che viene immediatamente catalogato come uno scherzo della natura da buna parte del gruppo dei circensi e soprattutto dal Max Medici. Per nascondere il difetto fisico e presentarlo al pubblico gli vengono coperte le orecchie al suo primo spettacolo, ma quando il piccolo cerca di prendere una piuma la copertura che gli avvolgeva il capo sfugge via e gli spettatori lo deridono e lo chiameranno immediatamente Dumbo, a causa di una sfortunata caduta della lettera D al posto della J su un cartellone pubblicitario, la madre, per proteggerlo, interviene e si imbizzarrisce, accidentalmente rompe la colonna portante del tendone e rischia di far male agli spettatori presenti, per questo verrà allontanata per sempre dal circo.
Milly e Joe prendono in simpatia il piccolo e giocando con lui scoprono che ama inseguire le piume, le quali, se gli entrano nella proboscide riescono a farlo letteralmente volare. Da qui parte l'escalation del cucciolo alla notorietà, diventerà talmente famoso che il padrone di Dreamland, prestigiosissimo parco divertimenti, V. A. Vandevere (Michael Keaton) riuscirà a convincere Max a diventare proprio socio e portare l'elefantino nel proprio parco come attrazione principale, il piccolo viene convinto ad accettare il trasferimento con la promessa di potere in futuro rivedere la propria madre.
Vandevere si scopre essere un uomo senza scrupoli, al quale interessano soltanto la propria immagine ed i profitti, in pubblico é sempre accompagnato da Colette Marchant (Eva Green), nota trapezista francese che dovrà cavalcare Dumbo durante lo spettacolo volante, la quale si innamorerà di Holt ed i suoi figli.
Il finale del film porterà alla luce alla triste scoperta che la madre del cucciolo era anch'essa presente nella sezione dei mostri di Dreamland assieme alle bestie feroci, l'intero gruppo circense si ribellerà a Vandevere aiutando il piccolo e la madre a scappare per tornare nel proprio habitat naturale.
Film piacevole, scorre veloce e non richiede troppo impegno, anche se tratta tematiche pesanti, come ad esempio solitudine, avidità, manie di grandezza, maltrattamento sugli animali, corruzione ed ingiustizie nel mondo del lavoro e atrocità della guerra, temi ancora attuali trattati con relativa superficialità ma che essendo rivolti ad un pubblico ampio, di quasi tutte le età, potrebbe avere alcuni effetti costruttivi.
