SCHOOLS: WHERE LIVES ARE CHANGED
In this age, ambitions are somewhat tied to schooling. Going to school has become indispensable. The reason is not far fetched, learning to read and write is totally compulsory especially in this world where information is power and so is computer literacy.
In some nations of the world, proper formal education is compulsory for all those who aspire to hold public office. As such, politicians have to be highly educated even if they don't have the "smartness" to show for it.
Of course, no one needs to be told that civil workers, both in he private sector and in the public sector are u arguably the most educated set of people in the world.
The modern society now has the belief that it is compulsory to go to school. The belief and the reality is that there is not much relevance for those who do not go to school. The emphasis usually, is not on learning but on schooling.
Now we all go to school. Mostly we got to school to get certificates. While most of us go to school with the hope that when we get these certificates we would use them to secure "gainful" employment, others go to school just so they at least have certificates to show that they are learned.
Whatever the reason might be, we find ourselves on schools of different types. We meet new people from different ethnic backgrounds, different walks of life. We meet people with different life goals, people with different philosophies and so on. All these people at the end of our school experience would have had some impact on our lives, either positively, or negatively.

The school, though we believe we are going there to learn through books, changes our personal lives more than we can ever imagine.
School gives us a new way of thinking, changes our outlook to life and it also tends to readjust our social skills.
Without focus, we tend to drift around in schools. We are just part of the crowd, doing whatever the crowd is doing, not minding whether it's right or wrong or even giving a thought to the future effects of our actions.
My Alma Matter, the University of Ibadan has a strong belief that before students can graduate, they have to be found worthy in learning and character. The school, believes that knowledge without character is a waste. The school therefore, tailors its activities towards making students better persons even while they learn to read, write and get usable knowledge.
The school and its devices will surely change you. The question now is whether the change will be a positive one or a negative one. Your reactions to your experiences in school will be the main determinant.
Tips for school-goers
- Focus on your goals, there's too many side activities.
- Mingle with others who also have positive goals.
- Learn to be time conscious.
- Choose your friends wisely. There's a lot to be learnt from good friends.
- Learn to experiment.
- Learn to ask questions when you need answers.
- Don't let school pressure change your ambitions.
- Learn diligence and persistence.
- Don't miss classes. After all, the main reason you're in school is to learn.
- Read wide. Go through a variety of books whether related to or not related to your course of study.
- Have time for extracurricular activities.
- Don't be anti-social, have fun when you can.
- Envy is bad, drop it.
- Swallow your pride and learn from those who have more knowledge.
- Going to school does not guarantee success. Learn other skills while you're at it. They increase the probability of success.
