Swimming is a great sport even though it is quite different from others because of the different environment. It involves the use of all muscles in the body so it's a great sport for those who want to lose weight without "sweating it out" and for those who want to keep fit with well-toned muscles.

Swimming has many health benefits and other benefits, just like any other sport. Below is a list of some of the benefits.
Benefits of swimming

  1. Improved physical fitness.
  2. Reduced risk of cardiac diseases.
  3. Reduced risk of diabetes.
  4. Improved cardiovascular endurance.
  5. Increase in lung capacity.
  6. Weight reduction for overweight people.
  7. It is a source of income for professional swimmers.
  8. It is a source of income for swimming instructors and coaches.
  9. It Brings international recognition for athletes.
  10. It increases blood flow to the brain so it also contributes to mental and emotional health.

Swimming is quite dangerous without supervision and there is always the constant risk of drowning. For this reason, one needs to learn from qualified tutors or at least trusted friends who know and understand how to teach it. There are tips to put in mind when learning to swim. These tips make the learning experience easier, less dangerous and more fun.

Tips for learners

  1. Never swim alone without supervision. Expecially in water above waist level.
  2. Always watch out for the deep end when you visit the pool. Start and stay at the shallow end if you're still learning.
  3. Make sure you are under the supervision of someone who knows what he/she is doing.
  4. You cannot swim in a tense manner. Learn to relax in water.
  5. When in water, learn to breathe with your mouth and not your nose.
  6. Feeling a little weightless is no alternative due to water density. Get used to it.
  7. Listen to instructions and try to learn based on those instructions. This doesn't necessarily mean that you shouldn't experiment though.
  8. Swimming in still water is different from swimming in moving water. Currents can be deadly.
  9. Try as much as possible to eat long before you'll be due to swim.
  10. Don't drink alcohol prior to a swimming session.
  11. Get the right costume for swimming.
  12. Perseverance is key

Try this tips and you'll be amazed at what you can achieve.
