We headed up to the Sierra Nevada for a few days of exploring and fishing at the Big Pine lakes. We drove up to Big Pine and started our hike at the Glacier lodge trailhead. We hiked up the North Fork trail up into the Big Pine lakes basin. It is an incredible area with beautiful blue lakes surrounded by the huge jagged peaks of the Palisades range. We made our camp at Second lake. The next day we did a big loop visiting almost every lake in the basin! Then we stayed one more night at the beautiful Second lake again before hiking back out to Glacier lodge and heading home.

Those pictures are incredible. And the area itself - beautiful. I just read a book about the pacific crest trail and it also goes through the high sierras. Maybe I will be able to go there one day when I go to the US again :)

Thank you! I have hiked many sections of the PCT, I love that trail. I hiked the whole John Muir Trail. It follows the PCT for a long section of the high Sierra.

So is it as bad as I read in a book about the PCT? I have been hiking the camino santiago in Spain but it's quite different. I suppose on the PCT you're a bit on your own?!
Still, sounds like a really good hike!

The parts I've hiked are not super tough. Some of the high passes in the Sierras can be a bit tiring, but it is all on a well maintained trail. Snow and river crossings can make things a bit more difficult, and there is a lot of snow and high water flow in the Sierras this year. But the PCT has become quite popular so you will actually see people on it quite often. The John Muir trail section is especially popular. Now days when I'm planning trips in the high Sierra I actually try to avoid PCT to maintain the solitude. But I will never forget my amazing journey hiking that trail in 2011. I plan on doing some blog posts here on Steemit about that trip. Stay tuned!

Breath taking. The water in some of the photos deliver a beautiful,
reflective, shade of blue.

Some of the lakes were a beautiful turquoise color, some of them were a deeper blue. All of them were very nice, but Second lake was definitely my favorite.

Photos of perfectly still lakes with magnificent mountain reflections are always nice. I bet that trout was delicious.
