The Only Thing We Can Be CERTAIN of is That Things Will Change!

in OCD5 years ago

I know it's a bit of an overused old cliché, but it really does seem like the only constant in life is change.

Clearly, the entire pandemic-Covid 19 incident has changed the way we operate in the world. Even just a year ago, few people would have considered it even possible that something like this could happen.

And yet? It did, and here we are.

Meanwhile, it seems change is afoot here in the world of Steem, as well.

Ironically, this place seems to mirror the greater world, in many ways... no matter what sort of "packaging" and assurances of decentralization you might like to put on it, it's business as usual in the sense that there's a small handful of people who run the show, and the rest of us are pretty much helpless bystanders.

In life, we are basically bought and sold with a few votes to political parties... in the cryptosphere, we are bought and sold with a handful of tokens.

Whether or not we like — or agree with — what's happening doesn't tend to matter.

It all makes me remember an old saying that used to go around a lot, back when I was living down in Texas some 20-25 years ago:

Don't confuse me with the FACTS when my mind is already made up!

One thing I have learned over the years is that you might be able to take two similar things and label them "the same," but that does not actually make them the same.

Thus, creating a fork of a blockchain with a new token and new protocols (think Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash, for example) is NOT THE SAME THING as creating an internal hard fork on an existing chain to change the rules without consensus.

But again, I am just one of the powerless little fish who gets to stand by and watch the show unfold. I will omit how I feel about long term account holders having their assets seized... instead, I just have my own immediate worries that Steem is now under central control, and the functional result of that is that I might lose all my accumulated efforts if Steem is suddenly declared a security rather than a decentralized cryptocurrency.

And that would really suck! I stuck with this place when the price of Steem dropped below seven cents in 2017, and I saw $8.00 Steem... but what happens now?
