Some Days All We Do Are Trivial Invisible Things!

in WORLD OF XPILAR3 years ago

Today was one of those days where it didn’t feel like I got much of anything done.

Mind you, I have never been a big fan of the whole ”we must always be industrious every waking moment” school of thought… but today I was actually doing things, but they were mostly of the ”invisible” kind.

”Invisible Things?”

You probably know invisible things.

You work at something all day and end up tired and yet it doesn’t seem like you did anything that made an immediate difference... and all the work you did didn't result in anything visible to anyone else.

For example, I spent a large part of today completely reorganizing my email folders… a much needed thing that hadn’t been done since I got my gmail account in 2003 or so.

For all those years, I've just added random new folders when it seemed fitting... and my reorganizing job today revealed not only duplicates, but even some triplicates.

Is that a meaningless thing to spend much of a day on? Not exactly, because our lives change a lot in 18 years, as do our interests and needs… as far as organization goes.

But it’s definitely an ”invisible thing,” and one of those things that will only make a difference in my life very gradually, as crypto-related things will now be much easier to find, and other stuff I rarely use anymore has been archived.

It seems so trivial, and yet it will make my life easier, by maybe five minutes a day... for many years to come.

Updating Blogs and Web Sites

If you have other web sites and blogs — especially some that have been around for many years — when was the last time you went through and gave everything a base-level overhaul?

I’m not talking about updating the appearance, I’m talking about making sure all the links you use are actually current and not dead. Are you recommending or pointing to anything that hasn’t actually existed in a long time?

Few things say ”I don’t care” more than a web site riddled with dead links!

Again, this is completely ”invisible” work that essentially has nothing tangible to show for itself… other than the knowledge that your sites are now current and updated.

As a professional book editor, that sort of thing is particularly important to keep updated! I don’t want to be ”the plumber whose house has leaky pipes” or ”the landscaper whose yard looks a neglected mess.” Maybe I’m old-fashioned, but that sort of thing sends the wrong message!

Fortunately, today was a good day to work on those kinds of things because we had an unseasonably cold, windy and rainy day around here… just not for gardening!

Thanks for reading, and have a great weekend!

How about YOU? Do you ever work all day at something that pretty much feels "invisible?" Leave a comment — share your experiences — be part of the conversation!

That invisible work is "terrible", because it really cannot be seen, and when somebody asks you what you have been doing, it truly sounds as if you have been doing nothing at all, when reality is that you have been doing so much!

I am running quite a lot of websites, and I remember when I had to implement the new privacy policy update things on all those pages. It was just about installing a plugin and updating a few texts, giving notice to readers that cookies might be stored on their computer as they visit the websites (you know, those annoying pop-ups coming at every website)... But, if you have some websites, that still takes ages.

And then you want to make sure that your websites are fast, and then I install a cache plugin to make Wordpress run faster. But, you have to test it, and then do some speed-tests, and maybe remove a plugin or two, and then test more. In the end, the day has gone by, and I have just tried to speeden up some websites.

I kind of enjoy that invisible work, if I had all the time in the world. But, when I look back at such a day and feel that there is so much other stuff I would have loved to get done as well, it can sometimes be hard to cope with it!
