DEK Photography: The Mobster

in #photography10 years ago

It's the 1990's. Organized crime in Bulgaria is at its highest, since the end of communism. Mobsters, most of which are either ex policeman or intelligence agents, are killing each other, fighting for turf, where they sell drugs and provide unneeded but mandatory protection to local small businessmen. Politicians are either working with one of the competing crime lords or are trying to fight against them.

It's 2016. Surviving crime lords have bought enough politicians to take advantage of the abundant European subsidies for development of new EU member states. The Mafia controls the Parliament and country like its own private company. No one dares to introduce reforms in the judicial system or publish the names of the politicians owning every property on the sea side, where a million of West European tourists go on a drug and drinking spree every year.

p.s. The person in this photo is (most likely) not a mobster. But his rugged build and stark expression are perfect for a short history lesson in East European democracy.
