Homeschooling, pros and cons.

in Steem Education6 years ago

Hello friends, welcome to my blog "I love to educate". It is a blog that was created for educational purposes. To provide support to teachers, students and parents in the teaching-learning process, facilitating school activities.

We have seen increased awareness of the threat posed by the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak. In the context of the spread of the virus worldwide, we must also understand what it means for educational systems.

Almost all countries have ordered that their primary and secondary education institutions be closed entirely to stop the possible spread of the virus among students and the general population.

The question is,

what do students do in terms of education when schools are closed?

It seems that the answer to this question is the latest technology. That has been used in different ways, from free courses, to sending photos, recordings and videos of readings, activities, exhibitions ... that students do at home, through social networks.

We will find out how effective all of this is only after the crisis, but it seems to be a good solution to the problem. Although home schooling is not very common.

Parents are making great efforts to keep children learning. Some complying with the programming issued by the Ministry of Education, and sent online by the teachers to the representatives of each student. However, there is the group of others who do not have a plan, they have to figure it out.

If this method works, what can homeschooling provide for you and your child?

Before making a decision about transitioning to a new form of education, you should think carefully about everything, consider the pros and cons of homeschooling.

1. An individual program - individual training, not standardized.

In home schooling, you can independently create an educational program and curriculum based on your child's interests, character characteristics, and performance.

You can dig deep into one topic and go through another intensively, organize an experiment yourself, do a project, conduct a study, or take a cognitive journey.

No one else will tell you when and what subject to take, what assignments to do, and what textbooks to study.
Learning will be an exciting process, full of surprising discoveries and surprises. Of course, don't forget the certification terms to prepare for this moment.

2. The results may be higher compared to the traditional form of training.

Children with home school study better than their schoolmates and do better. Because they can concentrate, their education is individual, and they go on studying the deeper topics until the competencies are consolidated.

3. Using the latest technologies and approaches.

Homeschooling is the fastest growing alternative form of learning. Since family education is chosen by parents who are genuinely interested in their children's education, the programs, materials and methods proposed are of the highest level.

Modern technologies can make learning more flexible and diverse. Children now master the latest technologies often faster than parents, so new ways of learning are strongly perceived.

4. More creativity, less boredom.

Who said learning is what happens inside the school, behind a desk, with a textbook in hand and a teacher at the blackboard? And that most learn that way. What's stopping you from going to the park to study botany or visiting the planetarium when you go through the star system?

You are not limited by the school framework, and for you the whole world is an educational space. The ability to acquire knowledge not from textbooks, but from primary sources not only increases efficiency, but also develops a "passion" for the subject.

5. Learning is more than that.

At school, everything is measured by journal scores and test scores. In homeschooling, children learn to build their own portfolio, which shows real knowledge and skills. And visual results are increasingly important to universities and, subsequently, to employers.

6. Goals and objectives set by you.

At school, children learn what someone who doesn't know their child and their needs has formulated for the goals set by the faceless state machine. In home schooling, you choose what, how and when to study.

7. Pointless tests, tasks and reports will be a thing of the past.

The dry language of school textbooks, a formal approach to presenting material, and boring homework drawn from real life are perhaps familiar to all students. How can schoolchildren want to learn if they are forced to do similar tasks and pointless tests?

And at home school, after reading an interesting book, children can write a review post on blogs or in the forum and read the opinions of others, learn more about the author, and read his other works.

8. Flexibility and convenience.

You no longer need to take them at a certain time and then pick up the child from school. Holidays can be planned at any time, and not just for the "hot season" of the summer holidays.

However, certain difficulties may arise:

1. Responsibility.

He will be fully responsible for the education of the children. If something goes wrong, you can no longer blame bad teachers or the ossified system.

Although parents of children in traditional schools are also responsible for their children's education, first, they share it with the school, and second, they have far fewer opportunities to influence the outcome.

2. Time.

In addition to a rare night or weekend, when the children are with their grandparents, they will be with you: every day, all day. But this is one of the advantages of family education.
Finally you will have time to build a close relationship with the children, really get closer and get to know each other.

3. Freedom.

Now you can send your children to school and take care of their affairs. On the other hand, home schooling will help you learn how to better manage your time and be more creative.
You can take advantage of home school support, turn to specialists who will offer the optimal training program for your child, and can work remotely and find time for you.

4. Rating.

Many parents are not sure they have enough knowledge, skills, and patience to teach their children. But you can learn everything. Homeschooling has taught many parents to stay calm when children make noise, be flexible if they are tired, and become magicians if they are bored.
There are no ideal parents, just as there are no ideal teachers, but we all develop and learn from our own experience.

5. Lack of knowledge.

Do you fear that your children have gaps in knowledge and that in the end they don't know something? What will they ask you questions that you don't know the answer to? You cannot know everything, and this is not necessary. The main thing is to give children the tools to find the necessary information and teach them how to work with it. Also, it is very interesting to look for answers and study with the children!

6. Home restrictions.

Chances are, your house doesn't have a playground, pool, or music class, but life isn't limited to just the house. You can choose the sites and circles that best meet the needs of your children.

7. Independence.

Sooner or later you will have to "rip the child off the apron", but not at 7 years. A strong drive toward independent living at school makes children trust each other, and their peers also have few life experiences.

Family education gives parents the opportunity to serve as an authority for children longer and to maintain their influence over them, giving them as much freedom and independence as they can bear.

8. Lack of socialization.

Some believe that children who study at home spend all day on four walls and, as a result, do not know how to communicate with their peers. Of course, in the transition to family education, the entire responsibility for the child's socialization falls on his shoulders. But there are a lot of places where your child can communicate with his peers and not feel isolated from society.

Your choice will be much broader than that of parents who prefer traditional education, because you will have many more opportunities to create a schedule for your child's activities. Also, the school experience is not always a positive one, and home schooling will allow you to protect your child from negative influences and give him the opportunity to develop fully.

As with any topic, the pros and cons are a relative concept. Even if difficulties arise, overcoming them can become an advantage in the future, because by entering university, a child will have developed all the skills for successful learning. self-education, professional development.
