Brahms: The Boy II - "He calls out to the ones who need him, the damaged ones."

The first movie of this saga was clearly something special. It was actually one of my favorite movies of that year and that story pretty much ended with it. I don't think they wrote that movie with the goal of producing more movies in the future. However, thanks to the massive success it had they must have decided to continue exploiting this character with a new film.

The Boy is a male doll, it doesn't have an evil face like that in Anabelle but it is kind of creepy. Well, I believe any doll can be creepy in the right context. In this movie, a family decides to move to a house that is next to the place where the events of the previous movie took place. These houses are surrounded by woods and while they were walking through them the kid happens to find his doll half-buried.

Even for those that haven't watched the first one, any viewer will quickly realize something is off about this doll because when they encounter the gardener that lives in the next house, which is empty btw, he has a sudden but sneaky reaction when realizing the kid has the doll.

As expected, the kid gets more and more enchanted by this doll to the point where the parents become very worried that something is wrong with their kid and the doll. Despite all the things that happened in this movie, it is not very scary. I don't consider it a horror movie but rather a supernatural thriller but I get there is usually some overlapping between those 2 categories.

This movie changed the nature of the events from the first one. There is now a completely different way of understanding this story and it is not really for the best because now it is more like a generic haunted doll story. The best aspect of the first movie was its originality and creativity, and this gets lost in the new movie.

It was an acceptable movie but nothing special like the first one. However, if you enjoy horror and aren't looking for any masterpiece but for a short horror production with interesting shots then this may be for you.

The best

  • Good acting from the cast, especially Katie Holmes.
  • Nice setting.
  • There is an interesting part where the mother investigates the history of this doll, on one hand it was good to know more about this character but on the other one, it totally changes how I see the first movie.

The worst

  • The original "The Boy" story ended in the first movie. With this one they tried to continue to milk the character and they kind of damaged the plot. The movie is still good, but it was really special and something very different in the first one, now it is just another haunted doll story.
