What is the secret of this single bone hidden in our neck ?
Located in the upper region of the neck, the hyoid bone is part of the larynx which is the apparatus of phonation.
The hyoid bone is one of the only bones not to be articulated with any other bone. It is lost in soft tissues and is attached to the body by ligaments and muscle attachments. This bone is the only one to be associated with the laryngeal apparatus.
The hyoid bone is anatomically shaped as a horseshoe with 4 extensions, also called horns.
Now that I've revealed to you the anatomical and structural part of this bone, here is its secret:
This hyoid bone is exclusively examined in forensic medicine *. When pressure is applied to the cervical region (e.g. during strangulation), the hyoid bone can get fractured. The fracture usually occurs on the large horns of this bone.
Meaning that if we see this fracture in the horns of this bone we know that the person was strangled.
Same story for hanging: when the hanged man suddenly falls, the rope is between the mandible and the larynx and there is a broken horn.
Some very ill-intentioned people can get caught due to this phenomenon when they try to make their murder appear as suicide. If someone is hung up but the hyoid bone isn’t broken it implies the fall wasn’t brutal and therefore chances are the hanging isn’t the cause of death. This is how we sometimes discover the horror that man is capable of doing.

So the type of neck related murder which would be difficult to identify is death through choking by applying force to the jagular vein?
The technique is used to differentiate a suicide from murder. The force applied has nothing to do with the jugular vein. Thank you for your interests :)
