Space Weather Daily Update for 09 August, 2018
Solar Fields Spiking, Planets Aligned, Rinjani Quake
The last 24 hours on the Earth facing disc shows a equatorial dark coronal hole followed by a unorganized bright spot. No sunspots and there haven't been in a long time. The solar winds are calming and dropping and the Planetary K-index shows this with a slight rise in the green levels, before it begins to drop down.
Mercury and Mars are lining up with Earth and maybe if the coronal hole wasn't moving off of center disc, we might be wondering what sort of affect it would have on Earth spots. Things are trending higher for a pickup in earthquakes. As I noted in my article, Another 6.0 Magnitude Earthquake and follow ups, with the 6.9 earthquake in Indonesia, that only puts us at 48 6+ magnitude earthquakes for the year. We average 150 per year. The previous lowest amount was 96 in 1991.
Earthquakes and volcanoes of note
- 5.9 magnitude earthquake 14 km from Gili Air, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia
- 5.0 magnitude earthquake in the Scotia Sea
- Cleveland, Alaska - orange/watch
- Kilauea, Hawaii - orange
- Krakatau, Indonesia - erupting (4 out of 5)
Space Objects
No new Near-Earth Objects(NEO) added to the database (2018 PW7) was added a couple of days ago and the airplane sized NEO passing by on the 27th are currently the only 2 spotted this year on the list.
Other News
- National Temperature and Precipitation Maps are up for July
- In my local news: So far, there have been no 100° days recorded at RDU this summer. Not completely unusual, but when everyone else is talking about the heat and the Southeast isn't getting it, you look at other things, like the misplaced jet stream.
- Elliptical Elegance. Better views of the stars.
