Movie review: Knives Out (2019)

in OCD6 years ago (edited)

What's up, you filthy turbo virgins. I've got another little movie review for you all today. I have to say, I think 2019 was a pretty fucking great year for movies. I watched quite a few films that caused a big old wet spot to develop in my pants in 2019, and that trend happened to continue on here with Knives Out. I went into this movie pretty blind overall. The only thing I knew was that it had a pretty stacked cast, and that the director of the movie, Rian Johnson. has been pretty hit or miss for me. I've enjoyed one of his previous films called Brick, felt very luke warm about his film Looper and just rubbed my nipples in amusement over how much of a meth filled dumpster fire The Last Jedi was. (Though, I can't say that massive fuck up was his fault entirely. That was a team effort failure overall.) So, I was pretty god damn pleasantly surprised with how much I liked this film after I turned it on.

Knives Out is a murder mystery film, a genre that has been so fucking played out that I'm genuinely shocked that this movie is actually so good. I attribute that to the fact that it has such a great cast of actors and actresses who all give super solid performances. They all do the absolute maximum that they could with what they were given, it's something you hardly see anymore in movies. The only thing I can fault with the characters in the movie is that I wish I could have seen more of them, since some of them are only featured for pretty small parts throughout the film. You might think I'm a bit of a film snob, tugging on his dick next to his waifu pillow, since this film is already so long and here I am talking about how I wish there was more. But, man, I really just wanted to see these people showing off their acting chops and enjoy seeing more of these characters. What can I say?

Daniel Craig especially was making my nipples hard by the end of the film. His character in this movie is supposed to be a world renowned private detective, and he absolutely fucking killed the role. For the first half of the movie, I felt a bit skeptical about his character, as he comes in as more of a slow burner than a straight up genius. But, by the end of the film you see how good his character actually is. He won't be making a bunch of Death Note fans finger blasting their assholes at the second coming of L, but I found myself pretty enthralled by his performance and was overly impressed with the character by the time the credits were rolling. I assume many of the people who saw this movie felt the same way, as we're now getting a sequel film revolving around his character. Fuck yeah, baby.

The writing of the film is also absolutely fucking fantastic. The comedy/jokes all land very well, I can't really think of any that didn't at least have me giving a bit of smile/snorting noise like some sort of neanderthal. Most of the rest of the writing is all pretty witty and intelligent with a purpose, which is great. The structure of the narrative and the pacing is also done very well. The only part of the movie that I felt was a little too slow was the second act of the movie, but it only drags for a short while before speeding things back up. It's definitely nothing too bad that will take you out of the film or make you not care about the characters or what's happening. I should mention this movie is a lot different from your typical whodunit type films. You usually are trying to figure out which of these disgusting troglodytes is the murderer and what went down exactly. This film pretty much spoon feeds you a large dose of information right at the start of the film and has you second guessing yourself and your speculations for the rest of the movie. It was actually pretty refreshing/different.

The cinematography of the movie is done pretty well, and has a nice style/look to it. Everything inside of the house looks absolutely wonderful, and the way it's shot gives a bit of a claustrophobic feel to it and just makes the scenes inside the home more suspenseful feeling.  That's not to say the other parts of the movie taking place outside the main set piece are shittier looking or anything, but they just did a great job on the designs for the mansion that is the center point of the film. I really, really enjoy all the eccentric shit going on inside the home, it gives a very unique look and feeling to the background of the movie. The soundtrack of the movie fits the murder mystery vibes pretty well, and help flesh out the style and feeling of the movie. So, no real complaints on the technical side for me.

On the side of issues for me, I can't really say I have many. I mentioned before there is a section that drags a little bit, but, again, it's not to the point where it just makes me wanna run into the other room and lick the toilet seat while I twist my nipples out of anger or anything. I guess the fact that they had a few character in the movie just be there to be involved in throwaway jokes could be considered kinda stinky. There's one character in particular that is glued to their phone and is just in scenes to be made fun of, and he doesn't really get a chance to flesh out any kind of character traits beyond the jokes. However, on the other hand, that's still fine to do and doesn't really impede the story or other characters in any other way.

Overall, I thought this was a super entertaining and fun movie. It has some of the best performances I have seen for a few of the actors/actresses, a very well crafted narrative and script and just keeps your attention throughout the entire film. I would probably put this movie as a 9 out of 10 for myself personally, it was definitely one of my top 10 movies of 2019. I'll certainly be giving this a few more watches sometime in the near future. I'd highly recommend you check it out if you haven't already, or you could go put on your fursona suit and go jerk off in the theater to the new Sonic movie that sounds like it is generic as hell, baby. Whatever floats your boat, I guess. You fucking cretins.

Let me know what you thought about the review. I tried to keep this one a bit shorter than I usually do. This might be the new format from now on with my reviews, not sure. But, yeah. Until next time, slutterbutts. Later.

Yeah, this was the first thing I've seen her in and I was very impressed. Definitely did a very good job at being the lead.
