Squash Cage in Full Force

We constructed this out of a bunch of bamboo and some wire, in hopes of retaining the butternut squash vines to keep the paths cleared. With bold optimism (read: naivete), we also planted cucumbers and beans along the sides.

The cucumbers didn't keep to their side, and are now occupying a full third of the bed. The beans have gone straight up and over the poles, coming back down again, and some have reached across the path into the tomatoes. Surely we can cut them, but beans! We're so used to stepping over things that we let grow where they shouldn't be, that some are allowed.

There is bronze fennel along the north side, a volunteer from last year. We haven't planted it for about five years, but it just keeps popping up all over.

So that's where it is now, August 1. We've gotten about 10 cucumbers, silver slicer variety, and there look to be dozens more on the way! No beans yet, and no squash are forming. Crossing our fingers that there's still enough of the season left for the squash. The spring was cool and everything got a late start.
