Selective Focus - Making Decisions in the Moment
This is a boat in Boston Harbor I found one summer. In the warm weather, I like to bike along the harbor on my way to work to take advantage of the Easterly sunlight washing the boats and buildings. The airport adds some excitement to the view. Sometimes I have a snack while sitting by the water. It's a great way to start the morning!
I love to find new ways to explore a shot. One way is to change the focus to highlight a different element of the scene. In this case, I had a hard time deciding which I liked best. The bell is glimmering nicely, but that net looks amazing with all the detail. I still haven't decided! If I had, I may have painted it in oils. For now, it sits waiting for when I have time to devote to all my whims.
When you're taking a photo, try to explore within the scene and give emphasis to different areas or objects. Move your field of vision around, alter the focus, capture everything. Take 20 shots. This is where the true creativity happens, not later when you're applying filters trying to improve the one shot you took.
