존메이어 John Mayer를 님들에게 소개해드릴까합니다

존메이어 John Mayer
본명 존 클레이턴 메이어(John Clayton Mayer)
1977년 10월 16일 미국 코네티컷 주 브리지포트에서 태어났으며
페어필드 워드 하이 스쿨을 다녔고 버클리 음악대학을 중퇴했습니다
존메이어 John Mayer 의 장르는 팝, 록, 블루스, 소울, 컨트리, 포크이며
2001년 1집 ‘Room for Squares’에 데뷔했으며 현재 레이블은 컬럼비아 레코드이며 섹쉬한 외모의 소유자인 존 메이어의 키는 191cm입니다 ㅎㅎ

존메이어 John Mayer 는 지미 핸드릭스, 스티브 레이본의 영향을 굉장히 많이 받은 것으로 유명한 인물이지만 정작 기타를 시작하게 된 이유는 백 투 더 퓨처의 마티의 기타 플레이가 멋져서. 백 투 더 퓨처를 보고 크게 감명 받은 13살의 나이에, 아버지에게 졸라 렌트한 기타를 가지고 연주를 시작하였고, 그 후 고등학교 밴드 동아리등을 만들어 활동을 하는등 다소 평범한 유년시절을 보낸 것으로 알려져 있습니다. 이 무렵에 이웃으로부터 스티비 레이 본 테이프를 선물받는데, 이 사건이 결국 그를 블루스에 심취하게 만들었다고 한다. 그 테이프를 늘어질 때까지 들었다고 합니다

그리고 존 메이어 John Mayer가 프로뮤지션으로 전향을 꿈꾸게 되는 것은 17살 무렵, 심근경색으로 졸도한 이후에 자신의 삶에 있어서의 음악의 가치를 다시 한 번 평가해보게 되는 계기를 통해 부모님의 거센 반대를 무릅쓰고 음악에 자신의 삶을 걸기 시작하는데 이때부터 곡을 쓰기 시작하고, 주변에 노래할수있는 사람이 없자, 자신이 직접 노래하게되었다네요 그러면서 천천히 자신의 창법을 개발했고, 고등학교 졸업 뒤 바를 전전하며 기타를 연주해 조그마한 명성을 쌓던 찰나, 더 높은 수준의 음악적인 공부를 위해 보스턴으로 터전을 옮겨 버클리 음악 대학에 진학하지만 2학기만에 자퇴를 하게됩니다

자퇴후 친구 Clay Cook (현 Zac Brown Band 기타리스트)와 같이 애틀랜타로 이사, Lo-Fi Masters라는 이름의 듀오로 시작하나 서로 음악적 견해차로 갈라선뒤, 혼자 독립하여 활동하기 시작합니다 참고로 이 듀오가 같이 합동 작사/작곡한 노래가 몇곡이 존 메이어의 1집 Room for Squares에 수록되었는데, 그 노래들이 바로 1집 대박을 내게 해주었던 No Such Thing 그리고 Neon이란 노래입니다 참고로 같이 작사/작곡한 노래를 솔로로 들어보면 이 둘의 음악적 차이를 한번에 알수가 있죠

Lo-Fi Masters 해체후 솔로로 활동하면서 애틀랜타를 중심으로 작은 커피숍, 바 등에서 공연활동을 펼치며 유명세를 쌓기 시작하고, 어쿠스틱 싱어송라이터로서 기본적인 팬베이스를 다져나가기 시작합니다 그뒤 미국에서 가장 큰 음악페스티벌 중에 하나인 South by Southwest (SXSW)에 참가하게 되었고, 그리고 당시 소규모였던 어웨어 레코드와 계약, 디지털 음반인 Room For Squares를 발매하고 활동에 들어서려던 찰나, 어웨어 레코드가 콜럼비아 레코드에 인수합병 되면서 2001년 재녹음과 정식 음반 발매가 된 Room For Squares를 가지고 데뷔에 이르릅니다 상당히 어쿠스틱 팝적인 색깔이 잘 드러난 앨범인데, 발매와 동시에 엄청난 인기를 끌어내며 전국구 유명세를 타기 시작합니다

이 때 메이져 데뷔 이전에도 명성을 쌓아가던 차기 기타히어로 재목이었던 존 메이어가 정작 데뷔는 아이돌로 하게 되면서 말들이 많았지만 결과적으로 이듬 해인 2002년 1집 싱글 Your Body is a Wonderland로 그래미시상식에서 최우수 보컬 퍼포먼스상을 수상하고 성공적인 행보를 계속 이어가게 된다. 데뷔하자마자 가장 높은곳에서 시작을 하며, 뮤지션으로서 가장 성공적인 첫해를 보내게된 셈이죠

1집 활동을 종료하고 휴식기를 가진뒤, 거처를 뉴욕으로 이사한뒤, 2003년에는 정규 2집, Heavier Things를 발매하게 되는데, 1집의 어쿠스틱적인 요소를 그대로 있지만 점점 자신의 정체성은 블루스 기타리스트로써의 자아 역시 조금씩 드러내게 되는데요 팝 넘버 Bigger than My Body도 있고, 블루스를 기반으로 한 넘버인 Come Back to Bed도 있지만 정작 크게 히트친곡은 1집의 첫 싱글 Your Body is a Wonderland의 연장선에 있다고 봐도 되는 트랙인 Daughters. Daughters로 그래미를 한번 더 수상하게됩니다 이때 자신의 레이블인 콜롬비아 레코드와의 갈등이 있었는데, 자신은 Daughters가 싱글 컷이 되는 것을 반대했는데 그 이유는 Daughters가 히트를 칠경우 자신은 평생 감수성 깊은 어쿠스틱 싱어송라이터라는 딱지가 붙는것이고, 자신의 음악적 역량에 제동을 거는 것이라고 믿었기 때문이었다네요.

반대로 자신이 쓴 블루스곡 Come Back to Bed는 히트가 되길 원했죠 하지만 음반사에서는 존 메이어 John Mayer의 의견을 무시하고 Daughters를 첫 싱글로 컷한뒤 대중적인 성공을 이루었고, 반대로 존 메이어 자신이 히트가 되길 원했던 Come Back to Bed는 그저그런 성적으로 받았다고 합니다 조금더 자신이 좋아하는 블루스 색채를 더하며 어느정도 아티스트로써 역량을 보여줬지만 대중들에게 기억되는 메이어의 이미지는 아직까지는 감수성 짙은 가사에 어쿠스틱기타를 연주하는 싱어송라이터였던것이죠

이때를 분기점으로 2집 활동을 종료한뒤 긴시간 공백기를 가지고 Herbie Hancock, Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton 등 블루스/재즈 음악의 거장들과 협연 및 세션 프로젝트에 참여하며 조금더 블루스 기타리스트 및 싱어송라이터로써 더 필요한 역량을 쌓아나가기로 합니다
