Soap!

in #homesteading7 years ago

Last year I did a “trade out” with a friend of mine. She needed the milky oats that I was growing and I needed some homemade soap.
She gave me a bag on the end pieces (pieces cut from the ends that don’t look very nice) and I in turn allowed her to harvest as much milky oats as she wanted.
Fast forward to six month later and I ran out of soap. It’s February so there is nothing growing yet. I’m doing my garden prep work and we are not yet past our frost dates for me to start seeds outside.
As with many things in life, necessity is the mother of all invention. I had learned soap making in my wildcrafting apprenticeship but hadn’t made it yet. I was nervous because I was working with lye and it is a very caustic agent. I have 5 of my own dogs and they can be rambunctious and overly curious. I got the gate out and sequestered myself in the kitchen and got to work.
Let me tell you, it’s way easier than you think! If you do all the prep work of measuring your ingredients before hand, it makes life easier.
Needless to say, I made some AMAZING soap using the best ingredients. It lathers luxuriously, and softens my skin! Not bad for a first time🤗
