It took Nixon to go to China. And it took Trump to undo all the progress made since 1971-1972.
In effect, Trump is instituting trade sanctions on his own people. Why? Because he is beholden to a bankrupted ideology. In this sense, he has something in common with the early leaders of the PRC.
This is not going to end well. Trade war is not benefiting nobody. As you say, things will just get more expensive, but salaries will not follow accordingly.
