Found a kitten!

I was on the bus on the way to have a lesson with one of my students when I saw a small black furry ball curled-up in the middle of the road. It moved a little, so I knew it was still alive, but it was rush hour with four lanes on each side of the road. The little bundle was in the middle of one of the lanes and cars, buses and trucks were driving over it.

Unfortunately, I had to wait a few minutes before the bus reached the next stop. It had also gone through an intersection, so it took me even longer to get back. Luckily, the traffic lights from one direction had just turned to red and for some reason there were a few moments when there was a lull in the traffic joining from another road. This gave me the chance to quickly duck through some railings onto the road. I grabbed the small bundle of fur by the scruff of its neck and made it onto the central reservation.

Well, the kitten looked almost dead. Its eyes were open, but it didn’t seem to be blinking. So, I waited a couple of minutes for another pause in the traffic and took it (this time cradling it) back across the road to the safety of the pavement.

In the end, as I was texting my student to tell her that I needed to cancel the lesson, the kitten ‘woke up’ and bit my finger with its needle-pointed teeth. It also turned out that its claws were in extremely good condition. I couldn’t let it go because it was so small and I didn’t know if it had been injured. Eventually, I called my girlfriend and we decided to keep it.

Of course, we had to name it “Lucky”. 🙂
