What Is Reality?

Last night I was in a forest of incredible beauty. Trees that seemed to stretch to the heavens indefinitely, never seeming to stop. The trees had fruit growing from them in every color imaginable, from round green fruits that tasted like coffee to white fruits that tasted like ice cream. The floor of the forest was covered with the most lusciously soft moss that would put 70’s shag carpet to shame. There was all sorts of different animals that could communicate with me without exchanging any sort of words or sounds. And the whole time I was in this forest the song Eddie Vedder by Local H was playing extremely loud on repeat, and I continuously sang along never seeming to get tired of the song. I never once questioned why I was in that forest or if it was possible that I could have been dreaming. Of course I did wake up and realized what I had experienced was in fact a dream. The fact of the matter is the same concept applies to how we look at the “real world.” The real world as we know it is what we have gathered in our life time and also what we as humans have experienced. But we rarely ever stop to question our reality, just as I didn’t stop to question my dream. Who’s to say that my dream was only a dream? My dream could have just as easily been another dimension of reality. Reality is not only what we as humans have experienced but more of what we can imagine!

A great way to explain my Theory is through the placebo effect. Say I have a close friend that struggles with depression and I explain to him that I have a pill that will cure his depression and make him happier, instead of giving him Zoloft or another antidepressant I just give him a plain sugar pill. It’s very likely that he will become happier because he will be expecting an uplift in mood from the pill but really it’s all in his imagination. If you believe in things they have incredible power. No one completely understands the universe or why we are here, the whole universe might be someone or something’s imagination.

No one really knows what is real and what isn’t, people may believe they know why we exist or what is real and what isn’t but they are nothing but ideas that we create to give us a sense of safety and comfort. We humans create various different religions and they all start by imagining and designing theories. Some may say that they are just that, a theory, and no one can ever be sure of their religion, but they can. What you believe in is what you are imagining so there for you are creating your own reality. What you believe in has incredible power.

What we consider real is only what we are accustom to. Say you were in a car accident and all your previous memory of everything that has ever happened or you have experienced is completely erased. You would wake up looking at the world in an entirely different way. Everything would be completely mind boggling. People flying in planes, modern medicine, nature, stars in the night sky would all seem like some crazy psychedelic trip. The only reason we don’t think of everything in such a way is we are already accustom to it. What if our whole existence is some sort of psychedelic trip? The possibilities are endless.

Tim Burton once said “One person's craziness is another person's reality.” Reality is not what science has proved to be real or proved to be impossible. Reality is not what you see on TV or what you read in a book. Reality is whatever you want it to be. Reality is not only what we as humans have experienced but more of what we can imagine!

Certainly! We humans always strive to understand the "big picture" of the cosmos, yet are always falling short of the magnificence that is Reality. If you think about it, it's a beautiful thing, for surely we would grow bored quickly if we were to comprehend everything. So as you mentioned, we keep on formulating theories, beliefs, religious and spiritual concepts in order to maintain our sanity. It's part of what humbles us, making us see that the universe is so much more intricate and wonderful than we can ever grasp. Keep the thought provoking writing coming!

P.S. I am an avid lucid dreamer and have experienced unbelievable journeys in that realm as well. In my opinion, it is just as "real" as waking life, if not hyperreal.

Fall asleep in the physical realm, wake up in the dream realm; while "falling asleep" in the dream realm is waking up in the physical realm. At least that is how I view it :D

Thanks! I Have tried lucid dreaming so many times with no success. Have any tips?

likewise, i would like to know as well , that would be dope

I have had very vivid dreams and have been able to realize I was dreaming but have never been able to control them..

Well, I definitely have some tips! I think I'll make an indepth post about it in the near future :) But what helped me the most when I first started lucid dreaming 3-4 years ago:

  1. The longer you sleep the more lucid dreams you will have. After sleeping 8 hours they will exponentially increase, so go to sleep early and sleep longer.
  2. Meditating before falling asleep and setting a strong intention to become lucid helps greatly, as your awareness in the dream will be increased.
  3. Learn some basic cues that you are dreaming, such as looking at your hands (you may have more than 5 fingers), look at clocks, look away and look back (the time will change), try to turn on/off light switches (they will not work.), look at yourself in a mirror (you will look strange and distorted, too old or too young, etc.)
  4. Keep a dream journal, so you start to recognize common themes in your dreams.
  5. Notice that things are happening which are strange, disjointed, or unusual. This can cue you that you are in the dream realm vs. the waking realm.
  6. Learn about the different oneirogenic herbs (intellect tree seeds, african dream herb, african dream bean, valerian root, nutmeg, etc.) which can increase the vividness of dreams and increase the chance of becoming and remaining lucid.
7.Make some friends that are passionate about dreaming and discuss your dreams often, the more you think about dreams the more your consciousness will make it a priority

That's a few things I can think of off the top of my head!

[source: my personal experience over the past 3-4 years, usually lucid dream a little bit every night now]

Very helpful! I will give this a try. I actually have some african dream herb seeds I need to grow and try but haven't gotten around to it. I also have some mugwort but have found it doesn't make much of a difference.

I also want to note, @davidmccauley, that from your last comment it sounds like you are already achieving partial lucidity. That's actually great if you don't wake up once you realize you are dreaming! People speak of lucidity being black or white, but it's more nuanced than that.

If you realize you are dreaming start by trying to change something in the dream, like turn a cloud into a different color, or try to create some fire, water, etc. It's all up to your imagination.

The difficulty when you start to succeed is you will often wake up in excitement. It's such a crazy experience to be "awake" while in the dream that its hard to stay calm enough to remain asleep haha.

Reality is definitely not what we "think" it is. When we speak and describe things in language we are limited by the capacities of our mind. At our current evolutionary state, I'd say that is pretty minuscule.
