"Starkrimson On Ledge" (10x8 oil on panel) painting process and composition breakdown

in #art7 years ago

Good morning Artists and Steemians,
Have a game-plan. I want to show you my thought process before I even pick up the brush (or knife).

detail

Here is the physical setup.
Composition game-plan: The red pear will be the focus of the painting. Blue objects/cloth and green pear will compliment, but at the same time should remain less saturated than the focal red. Background will become more like the subservient/complimentary blue, and vice versa. The other red pear must be desaturated to allow main pear to dominate, while leading up to it. Lightest lights will be isolated to the focal pear, and the top end of the value range will shrink as we move away from it in a radial way...it will be "spotlit". These are the thoughts going through my head as I look at the setup before starting:

First stage. After this block-in, I switch to the knife:

Love the knife work and texture in the background. I would like to request more close-ups of the thick paint :)

Thank you! :) Will try and include more closeups in future posts!

@davidcheifetz absolutely incredible detail and texture made possible with brushstrokes and knife. I feel that with the 3-D quality that's achieved I could reach out and grab a pear and take a bite! I've only dabbled with acrylics but love the texture I can achieve with brush only... I'm very intrigued with the process photos... thank you for including that. I need to checkout your tutorial videos on your site :)

Thank you very much! :) :) If you try the tutorials, let me know what you think!

So beautiful - I love the light and shadow and the colours are so rich!

I find it fascinating how rough and "ugly" you work in the initial stages, which underpin the polish of the final artwork.

Awesome. I'm glad you are enjoying the stages! -David

You have beautiful work! I'm a fellow artist looking to network with other skilled artisans; and your work really stands out! Definitely upvoted and following. Here is a pic of an oil painting of mine. I'd love your support and any future feedback/critique you'd have to give. IMG_0557.JPG

Thanks! You're painting looks great!
