Mom's Car Battery Couldn't Hold A Charge

I usually warm up mom's car once a week. Then her car wouldn't turn over. Well, I just took out the jumper cables and jumped the battery, but after having the car run for 20 minutes, I turn off the car and turn the key again and nothing.

It didn't even turn over. Well, I figure I better bring in the battery. On the battery was the date, May 2016. So it wasn't that old and it is a 96 month battery, with a 3 year replacement.

So I asked mom to find the receipt and I went to take out the battery. In mom's trunk is the old tool box that I gave to my dad from when I took metal shop in high school. Dad passed away almost a decade ago. I'm glad my dad got to use that tool box for a long time.

Well, I find the tools I need to take the battery out. I take it out and put it in the trunk of my car, my 89 Nissan Sentra. I go in mom's house and she found the receipt. So I tell mom that I hope they give her a new battery.

I get to the place that I bought the battery from for my mom, Pep Boys. There is no handle on the May 2016 battery. I was wondering why no kind of handle. You see I use the same brand of battery, Bosch, in my own vehicles and mine have fabric type of handles.

So I just carry mom's battery from the bottom and bring it to the back of the room where I know people bring batteries to test them out. Well, I tell the guy that the battery won't hold a charge.

Well, he writes my name and number on a slip of paper and attaches it to the battery and tells me to come back in an hour. Then he lifts up the battery and then puts it down. Then tells me the battery is bad.

I ask, How do you know? Well, he shows me the lump on one side of the battery. He tells me that one of the plates must have fell to the other side and had a little explosion and that is why there was a lump on the side. Well, he said something like that.

So he goes to the back and gets a brand new battery with Sept 2018 as the date. Same type of battery and this one has a handle. The picture of the blog is the new battery.

Since the old battery was still under warranty, they gave me a new battery and a receipt and told me the warranty is prorated. So I got the battery for no charge, cause it is still under the 3 year replacement warranty, but next time I may have to pay.

Well, that is good for the immediate moment. I carried the new battery by its handle to my car. Car batteries are so heavy. When I got back to mom's, I told her that they gave me a new battery for no extra charge. She was happy about that.

Then I put the new battery in her car. I even warmed up the car for 20 minutes. I cut off the engine and started it up again. It started up right away. Great. That is what I wanted to see.

I told mom that the battery works fine. So hopefully It will keep on working fine for the next 96 months.
