Mega Bomberman is an action-puzzle video game from the Bomberman series which was developed and published by Hudson Soft for the PC Engine and released in 1993 in Japan. It was later re-developed by Westone (now defunct Japanese developer) and re-published by Sega on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive in 1994.

Out of all the puzzle games on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, this was the most fun and addictive. The real fun is going against each other in multiplayer and seeing who can blast each other first with the planted bombs.

The Story

KA-BOOM! Here is the frantic arcade classic that is a guaranteed blast. Bomb your way around elaborate mazes collecting power-ups in search of the magical locket. Or plug in up to 4 players to unleash that hugely addictive blast of multiplay madness!

The Graphics and Sound

Like the early Bomberman games, it is in an overhead view, with a maze filled with Bomberman characters and blocks. You get to choose from many different types of Bombermen to play as such Police Officer Bomberman, Medic Bomberman, and some other character types. They all look great and are identifiable in the heat of battle. The mazes look good too, all with a great deal of variety. But the explosions look pretty awkward.

The opening music theme sounds like a cheap old Star Trek theme. Most of the sound effects are rather simple, but fit the game well, such as the exploding bombs, and the weird sound that lets you know that you are dead.

The Gameplay

Gameplay is simple, You wander around in a maze, blow up blocks, get some power-ups to help give you an advantage to the game, and try to blow up other Bombermen opponents. The single-player mode is rather boring. You just blow up your monsters in levels and then blow up a huge boss. But the game is a joy in multi-player mode, where up to 4 people can play.

The power-ups are pretty helpful, where they can make your explosions bigger, enable you to carry more bombs, be able to kick and throw the bombs. Plus there's a mystery ''skull'' icon where a mystery event will occur such as making your controls go work backwards, move super fast, instant death and other surprises.

This game adds new kangaroos in the game, where if you move on an egg icon, a colored kangaroo will appear, each one having a special ability, such as kicking blocks or bombs, jumping over blocks or bombs, or moving super-fast. These make the game a lot more fun to play and add a lot of extra challenge.

The multi-player mode is the replay value. You will be playing this game for a long time with your friends, so this game might be good for months on end.

My Verdict

Mega Bomberman is a great choice if you're looking for some great multi-player fun. Go pick up this title. This is possibly one of the greatest multi-player games on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive.

Play it on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive or on some dependable emulator. Have fun with your friends.
