Ghouls 'n Ghosts is a side-scrolling, action-fantasy platform game developed by Capcom of Japan and released as an arcade game in 1988. A Sega Genesis/Mega Drive port was released by Sega in 1989 in Japan and the USA.

I barely remembered playing this in the past. Thankfully, a friend's Sega Genesis collection made me recall that it was one of the games I sometimes skipped on playing for Street Fighter II matches during the early 1990s.

The Story

The time is long ago, when knights roam the countryside in search of the Holy Grail, defended the honor of lovely maidens and fought an edless battle against growing evil forces.

Then there is the brave Sir Arthur. A champion knight with the great task of assaulting the Demon's Castle to crush the Prince of Darkness. Can you help him do it?

Travel through fearsome places with great weapons at your side. And when you're really in danger, magic aids you with powerful results. Downside is that you'll have to learn how to use it. The enemies' magic has the power to change you into a helpless duck among other things.

But there's no time. Lives are depending on you. So swing your sword and make meatballs of your foes.

The Graphics and Sound

The graphics look quite good for an early Sega Genesis game. The levels look detailed. The characters look pretty good as well including the large bosses you fight at a level's end.

The music here just sounds somewhat evil and haunting like something you would hear in a horror movie. The sound effects are good like the weapons and your armor shattering.

The Gameplay

As the knight Arthur, you are trying to save the princess. This game is hard but not frustrating. Arthur could take two hits and it's easy to get hit. Thankfully, the hardness made the game more fun.

The controls are damn easy to learn. Both "A" and the "C" button makes you jump. And the "B" button uses the current weapon you got.

Finding the magic armor which can charge up your current weapon can cause a powerful attack on your foes but taking one hit can make you lose it. And you have to find it again.

The replay value is good. Beating the game gIves a surprise that I am not gonna spoil for you.

My Verdict

Ghouls 'n Ghosts is damn good and it proves that being hard can still be enjoyable. Furthermore, if you are not a very patient gamer and get easily pissed off at cheap shots then I do not recommend playing this one.

But if you are a true video gamer and likes a decent challenge, then go ahead and try it.

Go play this on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive or play it on emulators.

Let's keep on gaming in the free world!
