Fierce Dog Breed: The Rhodesian Ridgeback
Originally from Southern Africa; this dog is known for its ability to keep lions away from prey while the dog’s master shoots to kill. This semi-domesticated ridged hunting dog is loyal and intelligent, but is reserved toward strangers. They also require some positive reward-training, no rough treatment and good socialization skills since they can be quite sensitive and may develop an aggressive side.
The Rhodesian Ridgeback has the characteristic ridge that runs down its spine and gives its name. The ridge reveals part of the dog's heritage, which is a mix of European hunting dogs and African dogs who had the distinctive ridge. A fully grown one can reach 2 feet to 2 feet, 3 inches tall at the shoulder and can weigh up to 85 pounds.

Yes, the Ridgeback was developed in Africa to corner and hold big game prey, such as lions, leopard, and boar. Today, the breed is still used for hunting, and some dogs have even adapted to pointing and retrieving. The Rhodesian Ridgeback can also be found competing in various dog sports, including agility, lure coursing, obedience, and tracking, and is quite a good hiking or jogging companion.
As a pup, the Rhodesian Ridgeback is very active, but matures into a dog with moderate exercise needs. This smart breed also needs mental stimulation: a bored Rhodesian Ridgeback is a destructive dog.
Because of its size, intelligence, and power, it is not the dog breed for everyone.
