A Favorite Crime-busting Movie: The Untouchables (1987)

Hello and good day, my fellow Steemers! today I am going to post about one of my favorite crime-busting movies, The Untouchables (1987).

Like the old classic television series that shared the same title, The Untouchables (1987) was the story of the battle between Mafia gang lord Al Capone and federal agent Eliot Ness, this time in the form of a feature film with big stars, a huge budget, and a script from playwright David Mamet.

Kevin Costner stars as Ness, a U.S. Treasury Department agent who has come to Chicago during the American Prohibition Era, when corruption in the city's local police department is widespread. His job is to put the crime lord Al Capone, played by Robert De Niro, in jail. But Capone is so popular and powerful that Ness isn't taken seriously by his fellow lawmen or by the newspapers covering him.

One night, feeling discouraged, he meets a grizzled veteran patrolman, Jimmy Malone (Sean Connery), and discovers that the sharp, old man is the one honest cop he's been looking for. Malone has soon helped Ness recruit a sharpshooter rookie cop, George Stone (Andy Garcia), and, joined by nerdy accountant Oscar Wallace (Charles Martin Smith) to form a crime-busting team.

The men tirelessly go after Capone and his illegal business interests. At first, not taken seriously, Ness soon has Capone enraged over his team's sometimes law-bending tactics, and the vain Capone strikes back violently.

Finally, it is the least important and minor of crimes, tax evasion, which proves Capone's downfall. All of the credits for The Untouchables have big names, including beautiful, emotional music from Ennio Morricone and stylish period costumes by Giorgio Armani. Director Brian De Palma continued his style of shooting suspenseful action scenes with a tense stairway shoot-out.

In this film the good guys are morally good and the bad guys are hatefully evil. There's none of that trend of movies today making the Mafia romantic or pretending criminals are the cool guys. This film is basically about ordinary crime-fighting heroes.
