Super Mario RPG (Super Nintendo)

When I think about role-playing games, Mario was never the first franchise that came to mind. Admittedly, I like older computer RPGs more than the more "modern" JRPGs like the Final Fantasy series, even among those types of games I never would have though Mario would make a good franchise to base a role-playing game on.

Surprisingly , Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars is actually a good game. I guess it shouldn't be a surprise since it was developed by Square under the supervision of Shigeru Miyamoto. You will find the game play mechanics fairly similar to other Square games like Final Fantasy. One interesting thing about this game is that there are no random encounters. Enemies can be seen and unnecessary battles avoided if you so desire.

While the graphics and game play style might be reminiscent of Final Fantasy, the plot is all Mario. The story is not much different than the typical rescue the princess storyline in most Mario platform games. In this case, you must rescue Princess Toadstool.

Despite my misgivings, this is a pretty solid game. Super Mario RPG was originally released for the Super Nintendo in 1996. It was re-released for the Wii Virtual Console in 2008 and for the Wii-U Virtual Console in 2015. It was also released as one of the games included on the Super NES Classic Edition. While there haven't been any direct sequels, both Paper Mario for the Nintendo 64 and the Mario & Luigi series for Nintendo's portable systems are successors. There is also the newer Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle for the Switch.
