Street Fighter II (Commodore 64)

Street Fighter II was developed for the Commodore 64 by U.S. Gold. It was released in 1992 and was among the last major releases for the Commodore 64. While a Commodore 64 version was never going to be great in comparison to conversions on the 16-bit game systems of the time, it could have been much better than it was.

It would appear that this conversion was just an attempt to quickly and cheaply capitalize of the SF II craze of the time. The graphics, sound and music are not up to C64 standards and gameplay is glitchy. To be fair, there are some people that enjoyed this game and it is impressive that a conversion was even attempted but it ultimately has little resemblance to the original, at least in terms of game play.

One of the other problems is the fact that the Commodore 64 only had one button on its controllers. Street Fighter II was designed with six buttons in mind. While this is far from ideal, the Commodore 64 has proven that fighting games are possible with such a configuration. A far superior fighting game that was released many years earlier is Yie Ar Kung Fu. The graphics, music and sound are better and it incorporates several intuitive moves with only a joystick with one fire button. A much better Street Fighter II could and should have been done for the C64 but instead it got a rushed conversion.

That's absurd, trying to recreate SFII with a single button... It's like trying to play Mozart on a slide whistle :-)

I am in such shock and disbelief. I did not know this was an authentic thing. I remember NES rom packs having like a Street Fighter in it but I think that was a bootleg, so I just thought a Commodore 64 version, the Commodore wasn't even alive anymore when Street Fighter was out. Boy was I wrong, the system lasted till 1992 wtf? And then it had a Street Fighter somehow!? Shock and disbelief.

I know this was released in Europe but I haven't been able to confirm whether or not it was released in the U.S. The Commodore 64 had an even longer commercial life in the U.K. than in the U.S. Commodore continued to manufacture Commodore 64s until they went bankrupt in 1994. I know there were still some game releases in the U.S. in 1991...Simpsons Arcade, one or more of the D&D gold box games...maybe others.

WHAT IN THE LITERAL FUCK

I AM TRYING TO NOT TYPE IN ALL CAPS RIGHT NOW BUT IT IS HARD

Oh man

This is just too much in one night. I mean, just the fact the SFII existed was enough, but The Simpsons came out on it too, and it didn't look to bad for when it came out and what it was on plus what it was recreating. I need to sit down.. more somehow.

Heh, I don't think I ever played it on the C64 but it does look fairly good. Looks like SSI released several games for the C64 in 1991 including Death Knights of Krynn, Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday, Tony LaRussa's Ultimate Baseball and Medieval Lords. There's also The Magic Candle. There were a ton of arcade conversions from the early 1990s but most were Europe only releases...
