The 4 Longest Pizza’s in the World

Even though ancient cultures made flatbread with toppings on, and the word pizza was first documented in 997AD, 11 June 1889 is set to believe to be the birth date of the Margherita pizza.

Queen Margherita of Savoy was married to King Umberto and during a visit to Naples, Raffaele Esposito, owner of Pizzaria di Pietro e Basta Cosi, was known as a premiere pizza-maker in the city. He was requested to make three pizza dishes, as the Queen has never eaten the delicacy.

Mainly seen as a poor man’s meal, where scraps where thrown together, did he decided that he had to give a bit more than garlic. As the Queen’s husband is in politics, did he decided to dress one of the pizzas in the colors of the Italian flag.

By combining tomato’s, mozzarella cheese and fresh basil leaves did he represent the red, white & green in the flag. The Queen loved the meal, especially this one. So much that she sent him a Thank you letter. To promote his restaurant, did he name this pizza, Pizza Margherita – most enjoyed by the Queen.

To celebrate the love of pizza, have I combined a list of the top four longest pizza’s ever made in the world.

Criteria from Guinness World of Records to qualify as an official pizza:

  • 50.8cm (20in) in width
  • Must be topped with sauce & cheese (I presume Marinara Sauce)
  • No food to be thrown away, excess to be donated
