Magic the Gathering (MTG) Tech Talk - Gilded Goose
With the prerelease for Throne of Eldraine around the corner, let's look at a card that will see a lot of play in Standard.
Gilded Goose
Creature - Bird
Converted Mana Cost: G
Power/Toughness: 0/2
Flying
When Gilded Goose enters the battlefield, create a Food token. (It's an artifact with "2, T, Sacrifice this artifact: You gain 3 life."
1G, T: Create a Food token.
T, Sacrifice a Food: Add one mana of any color.
Playing three colors in this format will be much harsher as we no longer have our lands from Ixalan & Dominaria. So the only three color decks that can take advantage with the current mana base going into this standard format would be the wedge color combination as they have access to the temples of their appropriate colors.
So in this matter, it will be:
Sultai - Blue/Black/Green - Temple of Malady/Mystery
Mardu - White/Black/Red - Temple of Trimuph/Silence
Jeskai - White/Blue/Red - Temple of Epiphany/Triumph
Abzan - White/Black/Green - Temple of Silence/Malady
Temur - Blue/Red/Green - Temple of Epiphany/Mystery
Although the other five 3-color combination can play dual lands from Core Set 2020, your deck does run the risk of drawing less/more lands as the deck does not have access to the other temple without branching out to other colors.
Otherwise for now let's look at Gilded Goose & how most decks will be centered around this card.
The last 1 mana creature that can accelerate your mana from turn 1 mana dork into a turn 2 three mana spell was Llanowar Elves in which that was the glue to many of the Green based midrange decks in the previous Standard format.
Now we have this card that can help you branch out to other colors while having access to Oko, Thief of Crown.
Oko, Thief of Crowns
Legendary Planeswalker - Oko
Converted Mana Cost: 1UG
Starting Loyalty: 4
[+2]: Create a Food token.
[+1]: Target artifact or creature loses all abilities and becomes a green Elk creature token with base power and toughness 3/3.
[-5]: Exchange control of target artifact or creature you control and target creature an opponent controls with power 3 or less.
This is the card that can also let you streamline food tokens for your Gilded Goose to make mana with.
For now I will stop here. Don't forget to mark your calender for Sept. 27-29 with the prerelease for Throne of Eldraine.
