My Crypto Journey - Part 1

in #cryptocurrency8 years ago (edited)

The Beginning

My journey in the crypto world started in November 2017 when I bought 0.104 BTC from kraken.com for 650 euro (about 750 USD).

Before the beginning

That's not entirely true, my journey actually started a bit earlier the same year, during summer, when I bought a new NVIDIA GTX 1080Ti graphics card because my old one broke own.
One of my friends who recently bought the same card was mining ETH and I decided to join him.

Gigabyte GTX 1080Ti

I was mining for 8-10 hours a day on eth.nanopool.org, in days I remembered to turn on my PC before going to work, and almost never on weekends. After 3 months I managed to get about 0.1377 ETH, or about 45 USD at that time (now, if I would have kept it, it would be worth 135 USD).

I kept my coins for a while in the Exodus Wallet.

For the next month or two I experimented with mining Vertcoin and using NiceHash before they got hacked.
At the time of the NiceHash hack I had 0.0012 BTC, which I might never see again.

During this time I also managed to mine about 1 VTC. I also used ShapeShift to turn my ETH which was pretty stable at that time into VTC, which I expected would grow towards the end of the year. I was half right, Vertcoin grew and ETH stayed stable, but then the tides turned and this year ETH grew and VTC fell ...

After all was said and done, after paying all the transaction fees, I ended up with 11.29 VTC, which I still keep in my VertCore wallet to this day (right now they are worth 47 USD.

OK, but what about the real journey? What happened to the 750 USD from kraken?

This post has grown long enough, and I think that is a story for another time.

In the next posts I'll talk about how I got into trading, what exchanges I use, the ups and downs of my portfolio and what lessons I learned from them.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask, and I'll try to answer as best as I can.

Welcome to Steemit! Interesting to read your history on mining, I got into it about 4 years ago with a asic miner I bought from a now defunct distributor. Mined about 250 litecoins and sold them all for 4 bucks each....

Kill me now...

Fired up the miner again a few months ago and it worked for about a week and then poof. Something I really wanna get back into, so I'll look forward to following your blog and seeing what you recommend.

Hi, thanks for the reply!
I'm looking forward to being part of Steemit, I find the concept interesting.

I hope you got at least your initial investment back :)

For now I'll stay in trading, but I might do another post on mining later.
I was researching for a while ETH mining rigs (though I don't think I'll buy any because of their size and noise), and I still have a friend that is mining Vertcoin and a friend that is joking about buying a Antminer.
