THE RUNAWAY'S "BAGS"

To understand the behaviour of runaways the counsellor needs to know something about their interests, or "bags". It is their main term the runaways use to describe their " thing". It is their main interest and concern in life. They consider the Christian who witnesses to them as having a Christian "bag". One fellow said to us, " Don't come out with that religious bag to me." What are the runaway's bags?

I. The drug bag. Many actively seek out runaway or hippie havens because they know they can easily find drugs there. Most young people turn to drug later, after getting involved in the scene and making friends. Some do not fully realize what they are getting into with respect to drugs. But once turned on, they find drugs relieve their anxieties built up because of leaving home. Drug taking comes from group pressure and from sharing "pads" ( living quarters, apartments, or just a room) with others. To be socially acceptable, drug taking becomes necessary in such an environment.

ii. The sex bag. Teenage boys are sometimes forced into homosexuality and girls into prostitution. Most, however, get involved in sex vices by choice. Often there are group sex perversions and the sharing of many lovers. "Make love, not war" is one of the hippie slogans. They regard any and all sexual involvement with another partner as being a manifestation of that love, under the guise of love they give themselves licence to do whatever they want, sexually.

iii. The political bag. Almost all runaways are politically and socially active. Many decided to drop out because of political and social views. Some are dedicated to peace movements, while others mainly participate in protest rallies or riots.
