When the Portuguese cane to Ghana in the fifteenth century, they came from Roman Catholic priests who introduced the Christian religion to Elmina. But, on leaving in 1642, they took all the priests, so there was no one to continue their work.

Later, in 1752, the Rev. Thomas Thompson began the work of the Anglican Church at Cape Coast. He arranged for three boys, including Philip Quaque, to be sent to England for training. Philip Quaque returned in 1765 as a priest. He worked hard as a priest and school teacher until his death in 1816.

In 1827 the Basel Mission (now the Presbyterian Church) was started at Osu in Accra. Eight years later the Rev. Andres Riis opened a mission station at Akropong in Akwapim. In the same year (1835) the Methodist Church ( then the Wesleyan Mission ) was started at Cape Coast by the Rev. Joseph Dunwell.

He was followed three years afterward by the Rev. Thomas Birch Freeman, son of an African father and an English mother. He worked hard in Ghana and other parts of West Africa until his death in 1890.
