Will privacy someday be declared illegal?

in #crypto6 years ago

Encryption is considered dangerous to many in law enforcement and some want to make backdoors mandatory in all hardware and software. Would this potentially be a good thing or do we lose something intimate when privacy is lost?

What do you the reader think about this?

The problem is that even if you support the government having this kind of access (which I certainly don't), it makes encryption virtually useless. it's only a matter of time before (another) bad actor is able to exploit the backdoor, whatever it is. People who support having a back door don't understand encryption.

What would the government say, if we declare all government secrets and privacy related data as illegal. Would the government also consider to restrict its own privacy rules? I guess all of this utopian ideas will never come to reality. Neither the individual nor the government itself can operate without privacy.

cryptography in the US was regulated as munition and weapon back in the 90s. People were not allowed to export source code in any way and some code in some countries is still regulated this way. It's absurd.

The problem with privacy is the question of what is privacy? Privacy can be seen as a practical degree of anonymity (which is an ideal). Of course anonymity means that laws and taxes as a force are worthless. If you are in full stealth-mode like with the magic blanked in Harry Potter, then you can do everything and nobody will ever be able to know that it was you. You could play god. You could go out, kill people, destroy things. Strong Cryptography is like this.

When we define privacy as anonymizing action which doesn't harm others, then privacy of money in the eyes of a socialistic goverment government is a crime. Your money and property belongs to all and only the gov can decide which part you will get.
