Only few will find it believable that law can be so mathematical, getting to a final answer or judgement will involve many "subtractions and additions". You can't just arrive at an answer without necessary and sometimes unnecessary interpretations. But i salute the deepness of thought and psyche of the lawmakers , am not talking about the agbada wearing lawmakers but the brilliant men that engaged in the boring task of legal drafting, to me they are the real lawmakers.
Thus, many Nigerian laws deserve speedy reformation. Therefore, this article is worthy of the attention of lawmen and non lawmen because of it's direct relevance on the conscience of humanity. Please don't tell me laws should not be subjugated to the command of conscience. It is a confirmed fact that some crimes are punishable by death as it concerns Nigerian Criminal Code and some foreign laws.
The debate of whether death sentencing should be abolished or not is not worthy of my attention rather, what attracts my attention is the rate at which grievous crimes are swelling in Nigeria. It must be noted that there are over three thousand criminals sentenced to death in USA, the soft attention given to this "sacred punishment" has gingered the pleasure of crime especially murder in the United States. People now kill for the fun of it because they know they will only "laugh to the legal joke of death sentence if finally convicted", they confidently know death is not their portion, they are comfortable with the criminal romance they will enjoy with fellow tough prisoners also awaiting death till God knows when. If you must know , the crime of murder is so sweet in America.
No doubt, Nigeria also enjoys the "patronage" of more than one thousand convicted criminals liable to death punishment, but the question is, how many of these criminals have been hanged. If fear of killing the "innocent criminals" scares us , how many special tribunals have been commissioned to look into it. armed robbery is sweet in Nigeria, murder is sweeter while kidnapping is becoming the sweetest simply because the tough boys will only end up becoming "life presidents" in prisons escaping the wrath of the law while the blood of the deceased begging for justice. Many will continue to justify hard crimes with the excuses of unfavourable economy when they know death sentence is just a joke.
